22-250 Powder for 55 gr bullets

I've used Varget but when that dried up I had some Ramshot Big here and used it. Does well for plinking to 300 yards.

Given the scarcity of varget lately and the overly high price wen it does pop ($212 for 8lb) I will probably be starting with a different powder

I have done very well, 55 gr Nosler solid base and ballistic tips, using 38 gr IMR 4350. 1/4 to 1/2 MOA in an old, purchased used Ruger 77V. Maybe not as fast as you like, but thousand of rounds down the tube and it still shoots.

For years my 22-250 has lived on H380 and some 55 grain pill of choice (even the old fashioned SP which shot very well). Recently tried Varget because I had it, and it shoots nicely too. I do not run em hard..36 grains usually, and it is proven to 700 on chucks.

I've tried IMR 4064, Varget, H380, H4895, and IMR 4350 with my Remington 700 varmint, 14" twist, 26" heavy long barrel.

All the above shot well especially with 50 grain bullets, groups in the 1/2 inch range and under.

I had my best consistent accuracy (group size in the .3's) with IMR 4350 which surprised me since it's not a powder commonly recommended for the 22 250. However the most accurate powder charge for this powder only produced a velocity in the range of 3,500 ft/s.

While H380 shot sub 1/2 moa groups, I experienced pressure problems with in the field when the temperature rose above 90 degrees.

Varget and IMR 4064 shot very much alike group (.5's - .6's) and velocity (3,600 range) wise.

H4895 shot very accurately in the .3's at velocities about 3,300 to 3,400 ft/s which kind defeats the purpose of a 22 250 for long range varmint / predator hunting. Still a nice powder if you can tolerate the reduced velocities if your result end up being the same as mine.

Best primers were Federal 210 match.
Used Winchester cases, full sized with a .002" shoulder set back.
All test with Nosler 50 and 55 grain BT's.

Going to be starting out with the hornady 53 gr vmax instead of the bergers. Who all has experience with these bullets? I imagine they will perform well on yotes. Want to use something that isn't as temp sensitive such as the hodgdon extreme powders before I resort to others such as 380 and 414. Which powders have u guys seen the least temperature sensitivity with?

If you want DRT & aren't worried about fur loss the vmax is the bullet followed closely by the Ballistic tip. Both very accurate bullets and very terminal at the speeds you'll be running. If you use 414 or 380 know that they require a magnum primer or velocity and accuracy will suffer greatly.

If temp sensitivity is the priority, I would go with Varget or IMR 8208 XBR. 8208 XBR will get you higher velocity and has a reputation for lot-to-lot consistency, as well, so that would be my choice.

22Dasher, I agree fully. I have shot pounds and pounds of H380 in my 22-250 barrels and never had to use Magnum primers.

+2 and I am in the 2's with my 40X

I shot Berger 52 match target hollow points into a hole with 36.0 of Varget & Fed210GM primers at regular 'ol "Book COL" out of my Savage 24" 1in12 twist. I would start at 35.5 with the 53 V-MAX and work up gradually from there.

I'm now shooting 35.9 of Varget with 55 Blitzkings at 2.345", same primer - as my main ground-hog hunting load. 3,725fps. Wonderfully explosive! :)

Reloder 15 was great too. In fact, I plan to try RL15 with 50 weight bullets this year now. It seems to maybe be just a little bit better for this weight (on paper anyway), than Varget. Expecting to get to about 3,900fps with a 50NBT.

RL-15 and a 50 gr Horandy V-max, I hit a mild load and a hot load node out of a compact 23" walking varminter.

Works out well because RL-15 also works fine in my .308 F/TR and .223 F/TR rifles. Simplifies things in the storage cabinet.

53 v-max and noslers recommended load with cfe223 gave outstanding accuracy at 3950 fps. However if you want to save the coyote hides I would suggest (after killing several thousands) that you try the hornaday 60gr sp.
