22-250 for f class shoots ?

First,let me say I have heard all the issues about barrel burn out,etc...

What I have is a savage mod 10 action with a new shilen 26 inch bull barrel(1inch)
with the 1 in 9 twist,and Bell and Carlson stock-and 16x weaver scope..
I want to try f class shoots with it..
Now these shoots are only 250 yards...20 SHOTS plus any sighters in a 30minute relay..Yes the barrel does get pretty warm with my load of reloader 15 and the 69 gr SMK bullet's..

My thought is this...COULD I maybe use a lighter bullet which I an thinking will not be as hot for the barrel..I have not used it in a match yet..Only at the range doing load development..I did try a few loads today only at 125 yds.Half the distance...These were 55 grain sierra boat tails,and I noticed the barrel did not heat up as much or as fast as the load with the 69 SMK's...
Does any of this make any sence to you...I am planning on cleaning after the first relay which I think will be a big help toward extending barrel life...

Dont see why not. Ive held some tight groups with a 22-250 using 55gr noslers at 300. I say go for it.

I am running 34 grains of H380 and Sierra 69 grains for a mild 300 yard load. Barrel heat is not excessive for 20 round strings. My barrel is a fluted HS Precision 10x in 8 twist. Run your pressure closer to a starting load and it will keep barrel heat much lower. With that siad, 55 grainers will work fine for 300 yards. You don't need blistering velocities to win matchs!

I know speed isn't everything when it comes to target work..
I guess I was more concerned about the wind.But I think that might not
be too much of an issue at that short distance..Never really tired to starting
loads for accuracy.I usually start around the middle and go up..
So next time I think I will start at the bottom and work up..I suppose OAL
might be an issue as well..Thanks for you replies..John

Working up a 80gr HPBT load right now for my 22-250......never really thought about using it for F-class as our matches are at 600 yards. In all actuality, it probably would not be that bad of a choice.

If you F-class matches are held at 250 yards, I would stick with the heaviest bullet your barrel can shoot accurately. Eventhough your barrel is a 1/9 twist, you may be able to work with 75gr HPBT. I have a Armalite chrome lined 1-9 twist that absolutely love Blackhill 7gr OTM bluebox (their reloads).

Just because you can drive a bullet to a certain MV, does not necessarily mean you need to. Shooting the heavier bullets at modest MV will be just fine to 250 yards matches. Furthermore, you will increase the life of your barrel.
