22-250 Components

I have been very pleased with the SIG brass for a cheap bulk option. Seems to hold up well and be fairly consistent in weight and volume. Much better than Hornady although a little harder to find. H4895 has been my go to Powder for light bullets. Accuracy has been amazing and its temp stable unlike H380.

A few years back I had a Sako 22/250 varmint barrel rifle. I worked up to 43 grs of StaBal 6.5 with a 53 gr Hornady match using a Rem 9 1/2m primer in a Laupa case. Settled on 42.5 grs and got good accuracy with 3800 ft/sec. JME
Too Add: The 53 gr Hornady match would work in my 14 twist but not the 53 gr V-max.

I have several thousand pieces of Sig brass in use. Just got 1000 308 cases Friday. It is my first choice in brass. Starline is second. The last batch of Lapua 223 Match I got was half gone after two firings.

My friend & I have gone to ID for 8 years now. He uses a .223AI XP-100 handgun. I use a XPR XP-100 .22-250 handgun. We,ve hunted 6 days each year and have taken a little over 3500 rockchucks. We don't even own a rifle.
For my .22-250 for over 30 years I use only AA2015, 40 gr. BTs, CCI LG primers, Win. brass mostly, but some other mixed. This gun continues to shoot 3/8" each year. I'm not changing.
Initially, I thought the wind would cause problems, so I used 50 gr. BTs at first. My friend only used 40 gr. BTs. I switched to 40 gr. 6 years ago. THis year the wind was not good- 15-35 mph each day. We both made shots out to 350 yds. with only a little hold off.
This year was unreal. Went to a new farm. First 2 hours we got 47 chucks. The rest of the trip was nonstop shooting on our older 7 farms. I'll include a pic of what 2 old guys with handguns can do. We ran out of ammo at 3PM the last day. Went to thank all the farmers. They demanded we return. Rifle guys hadn't done what we did.20250523_153924.jpg

Where's the buzzworms?

I have decided to shoot the Winchester Model 70 Varmint 26-inch 14T as-is after much input from you 'all. The primary use for this will be rock chucks. For my enjoyment, I like red mist & itty-bitty bits and pcs. :p

Brass- I do not want to invest in Lapua or any of the other top shelf brass at this point. I want to stick with the basic everyday brass such as, R-P, Winchester, PMC, Hornady and others. I have heard good things about PMC brass.

Bullet- My thoughts are a 50-grainer, like a BT, Vmax or Blitz. I like speed!

Powder- I like what I see for Winchester StaBALL both 6.5 and Match. Is anyone used it for their 22-250?

I'm wide open for info guys!
Well, PMC brass is not "everyday" brass, much better than those others but you won't find it anymore unless you happen on to some loaded ammo. Get Starline if they make 22-250, not cheap but still about 1/2 the cost of Lapua. Otherwise just spring for Lapua or Peterson and be done with it......don't cheap out.
Win. 760 powder has always worked well in that case, and Reloder 15 is my first choice, if available.

***I just read AckleymanII's post down there and he's right, I'd forgotten. Lapua 22-250 brass is larger in the web and won't fit my chamber, likely too big in a SAAMI reamer unless it's been spc'd for Lapua. Only has to be a very little bit larger to not fit. PMC works in my chamber, Lapua doesnt.

Howdy !

- WW760/H414 if you can get it. You could probably just about fill the case w/ IMR4350, IF shooting 50gr bullets. Range testing would prove whether that is true or not. For all powders, Increase charge weights in safe increments, using caution.

I have not yet shot 6.5 StaBal in my “ .22-35 Remington “ wildcat, but will be shooting it
when my new gain-twist Bartlein comes in; and gets it’s chamber + threads cut.
During max pressure trials I performed w/the original .22-35 take-off barrel, I found
6.5StaBal to meter just as easily as WW760/H414 ( O’Haus “ Dial-a-grain 110 “, and
Frankford Arsenal digital powder measure ).

- FED Large Magnum Rifle Match ( GM215M )

- Even if you prefer to use .224” cal 50gr varmint bullets on rock chucks because of terminal ( explosive ) effects; please consider trying the Hornady 55SX. These anchored
NE Indiana groundhogs much better than the lighter 50SX did. The 55SX has given me zero crawlers for any and all years I used them on “ Soybeanus Digestus “, and no
“ shoot throughs “. The 55SX proved hyper accurate in my custom .22-35 varmint rifle,
which was set up by rifle smith Fred Sinclair… specifically for use of the 55SX.
I shot them from a 24” SS Hart 1-14 5-groove, while my best friend shot them from the 26” chrome Moly 1-14 .220Swift barrel on his Savage 112V. We also shot the 55SX from multiple .22-250s, including some customs… all with 1-14 barrels.

With regards,

I use 22-250 brass..lol RP, Win, PPU, dont seem to matter, it will do minute of PDog.
My preference is 40 Vmax in front of N135, avg 3950 Fps and it will half a Pdog, I would think it
would a groundhog or rockchuck or whatever them varmints are. That load has taken 2 coyotes, not much
damage on the exit side but dead. Varget works well, but then Varget works well in most. 50gr vmax, my 250s seem to enjoy varget going about 3700 fps, I dont push em real hard.

I'm finding small lots of PMC once fired. I don't want to do it that way though. Starline and Peterson don't make 22-250 brass, or I'd be all over it! And just what I remember someone saying on the Lapua and chamber. That's for another topic.

Keep an eye open for the older Winchester blue bag brass or try the PRVI stuff.
The 50 grain Vmax will shoot fine. Stayball6.5 is probably too slow for that weight, I’ve used it for heavier bullets with good success. Varget is tough to beat with 50-55 grain bullets but WW760/H414, 4064, 4895 will also work.
You can't beat 50 vmax with 38+ grains of h380. little, tiny groups, under 1/2 inch. Been my prairie dog load for years.

I have decided to use Sig Sauer brass. As for all powders mentioned, I have most on hand. Then I will do Winchester LR primers. So that leaves me to what 50-grain bullet to try first.
