22-250 Components

I have decided to shoot the Winchester Model 70 Varmint 26-inch 14T as-is after much input from you 'all. The primary use for this will be rock chucks. For my enjoyment, I like red mist & itty-bitty bits and pcs. :p

Brass- I do not want to invest in Lapua or any of the other top shelf brass at this point. I want to stick with the basic everyday brass such as, R-P, Winchester, PMC, Hornady and others. I have heard good things about PMC brass.

Bullet- My thoughts are a 50-grainer, like a BT, Vmax or Blitz. I like speed!

Powder- I like what I see for Winchester StaBALL both 6.5 and Match. Is anyone used it for their 22-250?

I'm wide open for info guys!

I don't even qualify as new yet, so asking to learn and work toward my new qualification. What about Starline brass? And does the answer vary based on caliber or is it the same across the board?

I have a lot of Starline I have made 17FB, 20VT and 20P from (Well, my Friend did). I also plan to use it in other cartridges. You will find opinions vary and you will be the deciding factor. We're all on different budgets too!

Always used Remington brass and you can't go wrong with CFE223 under Hornady 52-grain ELD-M bullets. Makes tiny little groups out of my Ruger #1 22-250 with 1 - 14 twist.

I've had problems with plenty of new Winchester brass in the past. Red bag, not the old blue bag though. Off center and double punched flash holes in multiple different lots over the years. I would look for Sig brass if you can find it. Its what I use in my Ackley. Primer pockets are tough stuff.

You can probably start and stop your bullet search with a 50gr Vmax and focus more on powder.

Hello Mike. I have had great success using winchester brass, Varget powder and 50grn v-max bullets. I have used the 50grn Sierra blitzkings as well with great results. My varget load is fairly warm, but not silly, around 3850fps. I did run some 40grn v-maxs for a season, also with Varget, around 4150fps. They were very accurate and fast, but in the end I thought the 50s hit the dogs harder and were less bothered by the wind. I haven't ever used any of the winchester powders in my rifles, but I can vouch for Varget. I have about 50 pieces of lapua brass i use some times, I can't say that it does any better in my application than the old winchester blue bag stuff. I did start annealing my 22-250 after I noticed that i started getting a lot of split necks and shoulders after a couple loadings. For what is worth, my gun is a Remington 700 with a Krieger barrel.

Keep an eye open for the older Winchester blue bag brass or try the PRVI stuff.
The 50 grain Vmax will shoot fine. Stayball6.5 is probably too slow for that weight, I’ve used it for heavier bullets with good success. Varget is tough to beat with 50-55 grain bullets but WW760/H414, 4064, 4895 will also work.
