22-250 bullet limitation with 1:12 twist barrel

It’s likely easier to just sell that barrel in the classifieds and pick up another barrel that’s already a small shank.
They are not really that easy to find anymore. The 22-250 is kind of a dead round with the newer crowd of shooters and the "black" guns in 223/556. That's why I jumped on this one when I found the deal. I'm currently checking on prices to have it turned/threaded and that cost may be the deciding factor in the project. I have done machine work with lathes and mills but sadly no longer have access to any machines and cutting threads was something I never tried.

Northland Shooters Supply shows new take off 22-250 with 1:12 Twist 26” Varmint Contour in there clearance section right now.

Lotsa places to source a small shank pre-fit tube from.
PVA, Bugholes, MGM, PacNor, X-caliber, NSS (Criterion), McGowan, Proof...the list goes on & on.

I understand it's a work in progress but I shoot a savage 12 FV in 22-250 and enjoy the 60gr Vmax and CFE223. I've shot in warm weather and push it to about 3630,and the same load prints the same at 3580 in freezing temps at 100. I've found it drops about 7-8 inches at 300 from a 100 yard zero. Tears up milk jugs at 450 yards.

I need to try the 53vax in my 12 twist... never tried it.

As far as bergers go... 52gr varmint and target shine in a 14 twist. My 12 twist has liked the 60-69gr bergers the best so far. Fwiw

My stock model 12FV 22-250 (12 twist) shot the 73 gr Berger VLD well but I had to push them hard. I bought and installed a 28 inch 8 twist X-Caliber and it shot the 80 grain Bergers well. Lapua brass, BR-2, H4350.

Oh I know it will be around but they are not too popular to find in the gun stores anymore. Last gun shop I went into asking about one told me "You don't want that, here let me show you this" it was a Remington bolt gun in .223, I left...
Impressive. I’d probably have tried getting him to tell my about how good the valkry is then I’d let him have it lol. 250s are very intriguing. Good luck with your project. Sounds like you want to make it a capable 22 long ranger

Update again: I found a member on here (Stan Taylor) that is actually pretty close to me and shipped him the large shank barrel. Stan has turned it down and rethreaded it to a small shank and re-crowned it as well. It's currently headed my way and I should have it by the weekend. Will get it all put back together and on the range for testing. Not sure what bullets to try first but have most from Sierra and Hornady from 40gr to 69gr. I'm thinking trying the 69gr SMK's/IMR 4350 and some Hornady 55gr V-max's/H380 to start, the 9 twist should handle both pretty well.

35 gr of RE 15 and the 69smk is a winning combo in my 22-250 AI as a fire forming load with a 8 twist. New Sig brass, CCI primer, two five shot groups made a 3/4" hole in the same target. It was only shots 21-31, haven't attached the chrono to it yet but I loaded up more to keep breaking in the barrel.
