22-250 AI

Anyone shooting one in a twist rate suited to the 80 gr smk's ? What twist would that be ?

Thanks , Jim B.

Hi Jim i have just rechambered a prototype 6.8 twist barrel that was used in 223 for the 90's and it shot them great. I am having trouble with the 90's i have to slow them down. I believe an 8 twist would stabalise the 90's and the 80's. I have a friend that has had the 80's stabalise out of a 9 twist with a 22-250AI but i would go 8.5 for safety. If you go the 8 it will work fine with both the 80's and 90's i have not had any trouble with the 80's in the 6.8 twist barrel at all.

Hey Bill !,

Long time no talk . What do you mean you have to slow the 90's down ? Also , what velocities can be reached with a 30" bbl ?

Care to share any load data ? I promise I won't add 10% and go from there .

BTW , did you ever find a good load for those DTACS ?

Jim B.

Hi Jim i have sent you a few private messages but they must not be working on the benchrest forum. Yes the DTAC's did shoot well in my Dasher but the 107's had the edge in the wind and drop at 1000 not enough powder capacity to take full advantage but the 8 twist worked well.
With the 22-250AI i have loaded 44gr H50BMG, 42-43.5gr Retumbo and 40-41.5gr H1000 with 90gr Sierra'a but i am blowing some up at the lowest load. The pressure is fine at the top load with CCI BR2 primers and Rem cases. The twist is 6.8 adn just to fast at the velocities i have not chrono'd them yet but more testing this weekend with 40gr H1000 3 shots were in 1 1/4" with 1 5 inches away and the 5th did not make it so it is close. I was shooting 25.5gr Varget with the 90's in 223 and Rem cases 30" barrel for 2890fps and never had a failure i believe an 8 twist will work with the 90's at 22-250AI ballistics. Their is nearly no recoil just like shooting a BR. The reason for the verry slow powders is to try to reduce the engraving pressure to help with the projectiles that did not make it i will let you know what happens but the 6.8 twist would probably be perfect in a 22BR. I am going to try the 223 load in an 8 twist aswell this saturday.

Bill,

Many thanks for the response . And no ! , I have not seen any pm 's from you .

My email is hisgrace29@aol.com , holler at me there anytime .

My quest is to see if the 22-250 AI can provide 3400 or plus velocities with the 90 gr smk AND the accuracy as well . I am talking about a 30 " bbl and the slow powders .

BTW , send me an email with your address in OZ again as I have a mate that is there , countryman of yours ) who is due to come here to my part of the states in 6 months or so . Thought if he was in your whereabouts you might need him to bring something back .

God bless, Jim B.

hey jim b.

i'm fairly new to this kind of shooting so id imagine that my recent thoughts on medium-long range cartridge have already been done. what i was thinking is something like youve posted.

i was considering a 22-250AI with a fast twist barrel,like an 8) to shoot a 75grainer.

a friend of mine has a 223wssm that shoots the 75gr bullets and he kills california ground squirrels at 500yrds like nothing and commonly get em at 700-800.

a 6mmbr or brx with a 105 or 107 is what ill probably end up going with, but please keep his post updated with any new info you come up with. im very interested in the 250AI with the heavier bullets.

thanks,
jeremy

My Remington VSSII has a 14" twist. What loads do any of you have for 60g Hornadys and anything else in the 50--55g range?

My 22-250AI wears a 26" 1-8" barrel and will push the 80gr bullets right around the 3400 mark with H4350. Haven't tried the 90's yet as I haven't heard if they'd sorted out the jacket problem on them or not.

Sambubba,

I shoot 55g Nosler B-tip in my 22-250AI, 7 1/2, 40.5g of IMI4064, pushes it @ 4085FPS with extreme accuracy.
