22/250 ackley

Can I use a std. 22/250 go gauge to do a 22/250 ackley? Or do I need to get a 22/250 ackley gauge? Same question for a 257 Roberts improved. Thank You I think I know, but would like to hear from others.

You will need a 22/250 GO -.004 for the GO gauge, and the standard 22/250 GO gauge becomes the NO GO. Same for the 257 Roberts if it is Ackley improved.

Have you read Mr. Ackley’s books? He explains in excellent detail how it should be done. I ask because you’ll be receiving conflicting replies here.

P.O. Ackley didn't have or use an 'Ackley' GO gauge. He used the GO from the parent cartridge and his depth micrometer. Remember, the reamer makers make and want to sell gauges. I have been cutting Ackley chambers since '91, I don't own an "ACKLEY GO GAUGE" for any of the reamers I own. The important thing to remember is to "trap" the cartridge that will be fire formed between the bolt face and the neck/shoulder junction in the chamber. The lengths of new brass cartridge case can vary greatly (from the base to the neck/shoulder junction) so it's difficult to put 'hard' numbers to this, sometimes. I want the case 'trapped', so it expends at the front and not at the web.

A little less than the Standard parent cartridge Go Gauge, or the brass you intend of using with a crush fit.

If you are using a barrel nut system, using the parent go-gauge, before doing the final tightening of the barrel nut, eject the go-gauge and tighten the barrel nut good. This will give a tight fit.
Once the nut is tightened, try to chamber the go-gauge to verify the bolt handle doesn't go all the way down.
