22-204 or 222 mag

There's no real world velocity advantage over an 223 Ackley, whose only advantage really is just cheap or free brass availability. With the 22-204, neck it up and shoot w/o fireforming. Use a 204 bushing die with the correct bushing for sizing. Smith can run the reamer in a Wilson inline seater blank for bullet seating.

All 8 twists.

22 inch barrels get me 3075 with 75 grain VLD's.

24 inch barrels get me 3025 with 80 grain VLD's.

26 inch barrel gets me 3125 with 80 grain VLD's.

I guess I don't have a good pic of the one on the left below. This one has a 26" fluted MTU contour that shot the two groups above.

What kind of speeds with the 40 grain bullets?

As I was only interested in shooting the heavier 75-80 grain bullets, there was one time I ever played with 40's, 50's, and 55's, just for curiosity's sake. I only used AA-2230-C, an older, pulled down powder, not available any more, but burning rate equal to the current AA-2460. It's been a great powder for 223, 6 BR, and 6 Dasher, to name a few.

40's I went to 4008fps, but the accuracy was at 3967 with a .580" group.

50's I stopped a little early 3628 fps, as at 3592 the ES was 4 and the group a .555".

55's shot the best of the three, due to the twist? I can't say. Go to loads ran 3601 fps, and no pressure there.

I then tested at 200 with the three weights, and the 55's won out again, although I would take any in a pinch.

I run my 40's at 3950 out of a 1-9 22" barrel, very accurate, if I try to go any faster the primer pockets get loose real fast. Coyotes go down like they are electrocuted.

I'm also using AA-2230
