20VT Suggestion

What seems to be the best 35 to 40 grain bullet in these rifles?

Probably 35 Berger or 39 Sierra.

I have had great luck with the Sierra 39gr. BlitzKing and H4198 or RL7.

+1 on 39 sierra BK. I have had good luck with 12 twist barrels but you will be in better shape with the 11 twist.

I have an 11 twist and the 39BK shoot the best with H4895 in mine. Somewhere around 25.0 grains depending on your lot#. 3700 - 3750 fps. Never could get the 40 VMAX's to shoot well.

Berger 40gr with 18.3 gr of 4198. Is a amazing coyote load

I load 2200 in 6 vartarg's. I know there are other powders that work , but 2200 hasn't given me any reason to spend the time trying something else.
I should add that all 6 shoot 32 vmax. I have other guns, like a 20p/t or 204's if I want to shoot a heavier bullet.

I've got 2-20VT 1-20SCC and 4-17 Badgers all shoot AA2200 very well

I think 18.6 H4198 w/ 32's but with an 11 twist you might want to try 39 or 40 grainers with 17.8 gr H4198. They will do a little better in the wind.

Argh! That's my 20 Practical load. Thanks for catching it. Just talking about 39BK's gets me all wound up.

Yes, the 39 gr is better than the 32's in the wind. With the most common loads the 39 gr bullet will have about 4" less drift @ 400 yds. and that would be a miss on a PD.

Depends on barrel length. With my 20" barrel I'm getting 3500 with the 39's and 3650-3700 with the 32's. I was getting 3800 with the 32's in the 24" barrel.

The 4" drift difference was with a 10 mph wind and with 3500 for the 39's and 3800 for the 32's. I would use whichever shoots best in your gun.

I don't know if there is a best length. I have a 24" barrel on a Cooper model 38 but it isn't threaded for a can. I like the 20" barrel when I will be doing a lot of walking or using a suppressor. Even with the 20" barrel I have killed groundhogs @ a little over 500 yds with the 20 vt and 39 gr bullets.
Zero @ 250 and come up 1 moa for 300, 2 moa for 350, and 3.1 moa for 400 yds. with 24" barrel. YMMV.

My model 38 really likes CFE BLK under 32 Blitzkings.

32 blitzkings and 18.7gr. of H4198 for me. Be sure to test 1/10th grain increments with this cartridge, it’s a great one!

What is everyone’s thoughts on the 32’s or 39’s pinning a coyote to the ground? I realize it’s about shot placement but hate watching them run off.
