20BR= 1,032 yard Kill= Some said it was a "No can Do"== WRONG

Hi Doc,
It looks like you have it all. I really like your range setup. Your rifle is max too. I couldn't do it justices. I have a Savage12 .223 and it will shoot better than I can shoot it. Old age creeping up on me....lol.. To tell the truth, I'm envious of you. Enjoy shooting all you can while you can. I've never seen rings like the ones you have. How does the rear one work on adjustments in height? Is that the same rifle you use on prairie dogs?

Ivey rings made in Murfressboro, Tn. Front ring is hinged so as not to bind scope. To adjust
loosen front lock nut & the rear thumb screw. Then dial in the necessary MOA on the dial
caliper. I believe one 360 degree turn is 20 MOA. I zero the scope with the rings set at zero
at 100 yds with the scope elevation turret knob set in the center of it's travel. Scope is set in
center of its travel which will not stress the scope at all. Now you can dial the rings up to the
MOA you need and lock them down. Then minor adjustments are made with the scope turret.

Here the Ivey rings are mounted on a James Phillips /Mike Bryant 40 X-BR
with a 6.5 x 284 attached. Scope is a March 10-60X tatical with 1/16 dot.
I zeroed setup at 100 yards. Then I dialed the Ivey rings up the required
MOA to reach 1500 yds. My first shot wast 20 feet short and 10 feet right.
I dialed the March in to the point of impact. 2 nd shot hit at Chuckie the
ground hog's feet. Couple of clicks on the March. Shot #3
and Chuckie shook from the impact of the 142 SMK. Shot #4 chambered
quickly before any wind change and Chuckie took another to the shoulder.

Thank you Doc, I had skimmed through that article a couple years ago but didn't get near as much out of it as I did this time, very good read, anyone serious about competing should read it.

This is the setup when I got my longest PD kill. It was
late in the afternoon and the wind had calmed as you can
see by the flags on my table. The sun was so low it was
in my eyes to my right. So I covered my head and scope
with a towell so I could see. We had a flag at 1,000 yds
but we had no idea how far past the flag this dog was. I
dialed up to my highest elevation click. This was before I
got the Ivey Rings. I was about 6 inch short so a little
hold over was all I needed. The dog was standing up and
Voldoc and JR were spotting. I would hit a couple of inches
left then a couple of inches right. I told the guys that I was
shooting a shot-gun pattern and sooner or later I was going
to land one in the center of the patern. On about the sixth
shot the dog went down and didn't move. Another dog came
over and smelled of him. We all jumped up and down and
could not believe the hit. Jr kept the dog in view and kept
a walkie talkie with him. Doc and I got in the Tahoe and rode
out. With the help of the walkie talkie we went right to the dog
althought we had to walk the last 500 yds. The dog was nearly
400 yds past the 1,000 yd flag.

The dog was frozen and taken home and mounted. The 115 Berger
made a small pencil hole through the PD's head. Great mount.

The last night of Safarri '09 Voldoc and I in a little head to head
at 1,050 yds. I was out of shells and he jumped ahead of me by
two dogs. I quickly loaded more shells on my shooting bench and
evened the score by taking two kills with 12 shots. Then we packed
up at went home.
This pic says it all----PRICELESS!

Great Post Birdog=

On that Safari= Birdog and I had 11 confirmed kills
over 1,000yds between us=
We do not shoot and shoot and shoot until we
luck one in= most kills on individual dogs are
< 10 shots=

VolDoc is working on a "Guns of the Week" article now
at the request of our Administrator Paul Mc =
It will involve my Long Range Prairie Dog Rifles
and in particular the 20 Cal. = 1,000yd PD=
Ole Birdog has many (Rifles) that make mine Pale with comparison=
I hope Birdog will write up a full length piece on the One Mile Shot=

My range lays East - West. Depending on if it is a.m. or p.m I might
have to change ends to keep the sun out of my eyes.
Here is the view from the west looking east.

+ on keeping the stories going. birddog and doc, Do you two use moly on your bullets? I noticed in the aritcle on the world record rifle that moly was used on the bullets. I've been using moly for years. I have a Savage that fouled real bad. I started using moly and that was the end of that. Also you don't have to clean as much. I start on a prairie dog shoot with a clean moly coated barrel and moly coated bullets and never clean it again till I get home. This rifle was bought new in 2000. It has 6 dog shoots on it and still shoots just about as good as it did new.

A couple of Saturdays ago Larry Scott of Great Scott Shooters Supply came
over to make the 1,000 yd club. We started at the 720 yd. line as it was
bushhogged and the grass was short enough to see hits. The first shot went high
half way between the 720 yard plate and the 800 yd prarie dog kicking up
enough dirt for us to dial to the point-of-impact. Now we are on the plate.
Larry was shooting a 6.5 x 284 Lawton action. He shot two shots that went
1" dialed it in and shot 2 that went 1.5". Then he went to the 800 yd ground hog
and hit it a couple of times. Then he made the prarie dog do a 360 degree flip.
Now we were ready to go to the 1,000 yd. line. We dialed up the extra MOA
and after about 5 zeroing shots Larry managed to consecutive hits on Ole Chuckie
at 1,000 yd. Larry wears a permanent smile now that will not wash off.
People who made their first 1,000 yd shot at my range include Greyfox, Junebug,
Jr in Ky, JR's son, George in Ky, Don M, John Kruzan, & Tom Morley are a few names
you may be familar with. Lots of Ky guys. Tom Morley has traveled the longest
distance to shoot with me. He has been here 3 times and stayed a coulple of days
the last two trips. He traveled 8.5 hours from Kenosha, Wi. Tom does not leave the
1,000 yd line for two days when he comes.

George, the way I remember you hit the 1,050 hog three
consective shots with my diamondback
Good shooting that day by all. You attracted a crowd
that day. Jr, Junebug, Greyfox, John Conger, and John
Kruzan. Along with you and I that is 7 shooters.
Greyfox made his first 1,000 yd hit that day with his
40-X Dasher. That was a day to remember.
