20BR= 1,032 yard Kill= Some said it was a "No can Do"== WRONG

kind of curious how that 7" twist shoots those 115 grainers? if you have a pic of your friends rifle, show it off for him! kind of curious about the loads as well

Birdog and Ole VolDoc both use drop charts generated
from our own measured velocities and using Ballistic Coefficients
we can dope out the yardage with a Lazer Range finder and be really really close on the first shot=
We make most kills inside 300 yds on the first shot=
500 yds, we have made as many as 5 or 6 straight kills=
The Drop Charts are different for every Rifle and every
load and bullet-=

Birdog has most all of his drops committed to memory=
Ole VolDoc has very few committed to memory=
MY Leica Geovids RangeFinding Binos are worth every penny=
Heck has a set also= an older, bigger, and better Model than mine=

In killing the 1,032 yd 20 BR Dog my first shots were right there=
Problems comes when the designated Dog will not stay up long enough
for the Killer=

Questions welcome=
thanks for the interest=

Shooting in 45 MPH winds has to take some of the fun out of it.
How do you keep your rifle and shooting platform steady in thay wind ?
How many feet of windage are required at 1023 yds and a 45 MPH wind ?

Hal

Hal,
The Morning I made the shot there was much more ideal conditions=
about a 10 MPH tailwind and I was shooting with the Rising sun at my back=
Main ingredient was this particular PD was not afraid and after two very close misses
Then He went on up to PD Heaven=

As long as the 45MPH wind was consistent it was not that imposible to shoot
in as long as it was coming across Flat terrain= made multiple 500 yd + kills with
the 20 BR also=
40grVmax's at 4.050 fps teaches 'em how to fly (in pieces)=
O&O and thanks

Great post, thanks for sharing it with us. I leave in 2 weeks for my pd shoot, but i doubt if i get any at 1,000 yards. Shooting a .204 Ruger with 40 gr. Noslers.

Thanks vmthtr,
Wow that thing cost more than what I'd be shooting off of it. It's not in this poor mans budget. ::)

Awesome is the name for it. All I can hear from my buddy in Starkville, MS is what is going on with Voldoc and Birddog. He wants so bad to go to TN and meet you"all because they just got to be great folks. Trouble is he gets homesick when he gets 25 miles away from home, just joking. Have a great day--hayboy

HayBoy,
There's an easy fix=
Me and the ole Birdg are Highly Social Creatures=
both of us love to have visitors come up to our
Ranges and shoot with us on our Farms in Middle TN=
Birdog has Long Range covered as He can shoot to
one mile== no mistake = one mile =
He employs portable benches = same ones we use for PD'n=

I have a 300 yd Range callled Moonshine Mt. Range= private =but
invited visitors given Southern Hospitality w/o end=

Doc,
You don't like orange do you? orange T-shirts,...orange bench tops,...orange towel on bench,..and even orange trim on your wonderful range shack ;) Doc, I thought I was lucky I also have a 300 yard flat range at my house, with about a 4* rise I can go out to 600 yards and from 4* to maybe 15 or 20* I can go to over a mile but it is real rough terrain after 600 yards, I have a nice 12'X12' insulated,heated/cooled reloading room at the range site but I only have two benches and they are covered with a 8'X12' cosco portable carport, not a permanent fancy orange trimmed shooting shed with five solid benches ;D That's real special Doc, I am happy you have it and appreciate your sharing.
Wayne.

Its a good thing WVU and the Tenn. don't have a rivalry cause that is an amazing range and I'd hate to have to recommend a new color, like gold and blue. haha, what part of Tenn. are you in?

Here's the rifle as set up last Jan. when I was shooting it at One Mile.

Stiller Diamondback, ST 1000, NXS 12.5x42 R1 reticle, Brux 1.250 no taper, 7 twist,
30 in., 115 gr Bergers pointed. The Rings are IVEY long range with 150 MOA adjustable.
Caliber is 6 mm Dasher.
The 115's shoot well in the 7 twist. At the 2010 IBS Nationals in St. Louis I shot this gun
in 'heavy gun' and got 4 th place in score out of around 60 shooters.
Junebug and I took 25 rounds one Sunday up to the 1 mile line. I had a 18" gong &
a metal ground hog set up. I had too much grass around the target as we could not see
all the hits, but we managed 2 hits on the gong and one hit on the ground hog.

Here is the one mile setup. Notice the angle of scope relative to the barrel.

Targets are at treeline in back field

Looking over Junebug's shoulder. You can spot a white dot in this photo which is the 18" gong.
Two white spots in closer field are two cows.

Doc,

I was great visiting with you while hunting at the same time in Holly. Hope to see you again, great story and great shooting. You and JR keep me in mind whenever you go back, would love to go again soon. Congrats on the shot.

I believe a quick twist 20 & 55 Bergers can easily 'remove' p/dogs out to 1K yds.....under very favorable conditions of course....I have taken p/dogs in excess of 1K yds with 8 twist 6XC and 260 AI....

My question is why do you pick up those flea bitten carcasses ? The Plague is still known to persist in p/dog populations

By the way congrats on your LR 20 cal kill......my two 20s are both 12 twist...Vartarg & Practical...Savage s/shots no less

;D
