20BR= 1,032 yard Kill= Some said it was a "No can Do"== WRONG

I been asked for details so here goes=

First the rifle is a Savage Dual port with Evolution trigger=
it then was sent to Kevin Rayhill and chambered for the 20BR
no turn .235" neck in a Hart 9 twist Barrel=
Stock was made straight across the Bottom so tracks better for
seeing Hits and Kevins Muzzle Break= I could call all Hits and Misses and adjust accordingly=

Lapua Brass formed for me by
" The Woodchuck Den" Master Todd Kindler=
I have 200 pieces of Brass=
My quest for a 20 caliber 1,000 yd PD started earlier this year when
a person on the 6BR board was going on and on about
a small caliber 1,000 yd + PD being a figment of someone's imagination=
My Shootin Bud (Birdog) and I have killed many many PD's >
than 1,000yds on multiple trips every year for the last several years=
but we have always used the 6mm's in 6BR and 6 Dasher
with heavy (105-108gr Bullets)
One year He and I had eleven 1,000+yarders on one trip=
So , I took the challenge and the Savage performed flawlessly=
How in the He!! AB Bently knew about the scope base and screws being loosened from the 1,160 mile trip is beyond
me=???
We had 100*'s and 40MPH winds every day=
came really close on day two as I blasted one completely off the ground at
1,500yds and thought He was dead= He layed still for an eternity and My
shootin' partner and I both thought He was done= but alas He stirred enought to get back into his hole=
BAD LUCK=
Load used was Lapua Brass= Berger 55gr Match= Wolfe SRM= RL-15=
Velocity 3,600 fps=

We do not count cripples or drag-offs as we always have to produce a Body=
I vowed the next day to get there by sunrise and the conditions were perfect=
slight tail wind < 10MPH and the dogs were out on my 1,000yd Ridge=

If you have ever shot Long Dogs you know that everything has to come together for the window of opporunity and you have to be prepared to send-it quickly=
Another point is the Designated PD cannt be skittish= as in, shot at a lot before= Adults are bigger Targets but infinitely smarter to bombardment=

I had shot at about 4 other PD that Morning and was kicking up dirt in their
faces but all were gun shy and would not stay around for follow-up shots=
When you have to go to another PD, in effect you have to start over=

Ole Lucky Boy had another grown Dog and two Babies and all were fighting=
First shot just low= next shot just right=
3rd shot= Ban=Flop head shot DONE-IT=
I kept it in the scope sight picture (NightForce 12-42 Double Dot) as JR (my Bud) was just over the rise and we have a technique to find and mark longrange shot PDogs=

2011_0605JRinKY0329.jpg

I drove around the long way and soon found my Trophy PD=
I marked it with my tripod and JR's Beautiful Tennesse Orange Jacket=
I ranged backed to the Travel Trailer and got 1,125 yds., but the reflection in the bright sun was bad and I later ranged it again (with my Leica Geovids RF Binos) and came up with 1,032 yds multiple times=

Continued in next Reply=

Set-up at my Bench=

After Finding my Dog , I marked it so we could return for Pics=

and to confirm yardage etc. =
Gotta call 'them Head Shots=

Least they can't drag off=

All that was left to do was Ham it up with Hero Pics=
thanks for listening=

I'll gladly answer any questions and try to prop-up all lies= (ggg)

Redneck,

The ballistics calculator on Big Game Info shows that a 55gr Berger with a muzzle velocity of 3600fps and a BC of .381 would have a velocity of 1346fps and 221 ft-lbs of energy at 1050 yards.

Great shootin Doc.

Dave

Doc,
I remember a earlier thread you had when building the rifle, I was very skeptical that a 55 grain bullet could accurately be driven that far, I always like to admit when I am wrong, Obviously I was WRONG if I can find that old thread I will rectify it :) Congrats Doc and a job well done, also I enjoyed the story, humor and pics, keep up the good work.
Wayne.

P.S nice setup ;)

Nothing is impossible when it comes to popping p-dogs. 1000 yards is not that far in reality.
Nice to see you had a good time and knocking em off at longer ranges.
Ive done it with my .223s, so its nothing for the 20BR. When the wind plays in your favor its even easier.

I beg to differ, a 1000 yards is a long ways, and it is especially a long ways when trying to hit something the size of a 12 oz water bottle, I don't care if it is a little 20BR or a .338 Lapua Magnum. It takes a well built rifle, a good bench setup and shooting skills, and knowing how to read the wind. If it was easy everybody would be doing it.

Doc,
Have you considered putting 5 on paper at that distance and posting that for us when you get a chance? I would love to see what that little thing could do on a calm day.
Wayne.

Wayne,
I will have a chance to do that (shoot long range paper for groups) later into the Summer=
One of my best Buds and Shooting partners (Birdog) has an
excellent place to shoot out to 1 mile= (no misprint)=
He would have killed a PDog at one mile on our just finished
PD Safari,
but He had last minute family obligations and had to postpone=
He has very specialized equipment to accompolish this one mile thing= His equipment looks somethng like this=
Stiller Stainless Viper action= Kreiger 1.250 st taper 30" barrel= 7 twist= 6 Dasher= 115 Bergers=
March 8-80Xx 60mm x 34mm tube scope= Shehane ST-1000= jewell (of course)=special micrometer
bases with 80 MOA available by dialing up= on and on=
He has made many hits on steel PD shaped plates on his Range at 1,760 yds +== as Ole
5 speed says (with ease) == (ggggggg)
I feel my quest for the 20cal 1,000yd. Pdog has fired up many others to try just that=
a good thing= Saubier Board members are trying as we speak=
again thanks Roger for being the MAN you are=
as we all, sometimes rush to judgement=
O&O

Doc

PS=
Another of my Long Range PD rigs= on the last day of our shoot, I decided to go long
with this my usual medium range gun ( 6 Dasher= 12 twist = 87 Vmax's= NF 12-42)=
I killed back to back Momma PD and Baby on consective shots at 1,023 yds with wind gusting to 45 MPH=
now that's one Ole VolDoc is really proud of Mr 5 Speed= (ggggggg)
