.204 weight for prairie dogs

If the question is still unanswered ...... why has the OP not spoken up?

And so I will echo what has been "said" here already ........ the particular bullet won't make as much difference as most varmint bullets are already explosive enough.

If the accuracy is there ........... and the speed is as well, the any of these good bullets are going to do their job. Forty years ago that would not have been the case ........ but competition is so keen and the internet so pervasive, that a poor bullet won't last long in the market.

What do I use ......... I am a predator hunter that shoots ground squirrels (grey diggers) for practice. I found my .204's like the 32 gr. V-max and that's what I use.

The accuracy is there ........ and the .204 surely generates the speed!

Enjoy

I understand that accuracy has a big part in what to use, but if both rounds are equally accurate...I would rather spend my money on the one exhibiting more "fun to watch" hits. I go dog hunting to watch them flip, not just to shoot something. I could kill them with a .22LR, but it's not as much fun!

I wanted opinions from guys who have used both in order to get a good comparison - which one flips them more. It's hard to listen to people say "this does wonders" when they don't offer a comparison to anything else. I've met guys who thought a 17HMR was "devastating" because they hadn't shot anything else. I know the .204 won't match the 22-250 for effect on target, but I'd still like to squeeze as much show out of it as I can. But the consensus seems to be that it won't really matter which weight is used, so that's a load off. I'm kind of one of those types where "there might be something better out there, I need it" haha

If ya really wanna Jetstream a round into a Pdawg just for effect, then look at the Barnes 26 grain Varmint Grenades. Then crank the charge up to max and shoot away.

And Hornaday makes a Vmax in 30 grain NTX that is spllosive.

Last year, I bought some Speer unleaded 34 grain bullets on sale somewhere. They are not super accurate compared to the V-Maxes in my .204 Practical and they look like a flying beer can - as the hollow point is so wide. What they lack in accuracy is made up for in air time. Spectacular.

Another way to look at your question is volume or quality?
I like the 32 gr. dogtown bullets and the speed with explosiveness/flips . @ 500 bullets per 40$ it's a steal.
I also like the 39 gr. Sierra BT when the winds come up, higher bc and devastating results. But @ 500 Bullets per 100+ $ OUCH! (if you can find them!)

My thoughts are a 40 grain bullet is shot faster out of a .223 . More easily available, but the BC is a lot less.

If most shots are under 200 yards the 32's are best,
If most shots are over 200 yards then the 39's are better.

If money is no object,
204 Ruger shooting Sierra 39's 11twist
223 Rem shooting 53 V-Max's 9twist
22-250ai shooting 60 V-Max's 12 twist.

Just my 2cents, I shot 1,500 rds in 2 days last spring and most shots were 200 yds or less. The 32's are awesome$ The Savages were restlesss... I was called a Gamehog many years ago and it just stuck...

the 39 bltz kings just hammer. I have 4 204AI 3 of the guns are 1-8 twist for the 55 bergers going 3400fps. the 39 are going 3950fps. They flat out destroy the momma dogs. for now the 39 bltz king kill is 720 yards. Going for the 1000 yard kill with the 55s. All guns use a 1.250 strait barrel.

The 20 cal 34g flatbase HP Dogtown/Varmint Nightmare Extreme are an excellent short range budget bullet. They flip 'em just as good as any other at short range. They have a lousy BC but under 200 who cares? A 20 Prac with these and milsurp cases and powder is about as cheap as it gets per rd including barrel wear.

When you're cooking along at 3800+ FPS just about any of the 20 cal bullets will make a mess of a PD.

I've shot 32 VMax, SBK, 39 SBK and 40 VMax and they all make a great splat. I'll gladly give up some speed for accuracy and hit them solid out to 500+ yards.
