204 ruger

if you have an accurate enough rifle I would say it is but I have only hunted p dogs. Just be aware that most factory rifles can NOT shoot 40s accurately with a 1/12 twist.
I thought by now most manufactures would have switched to a faster twist but only one I know of is a cva cascade

No issue with dispatching Prairie Dogs or Chucks well past 400 yards with the Sierra 39 or Hornady 40.
Here is a sample of a 204 from last summer in Wyoming.

Notice the 400yd energy 482 ft lb.
Hornady factory 55 vmax 429
You need to step up bullet weight and/or case capacity(velocity) to increase the 400 yard energy over the 204R.

I'm currently looking to build a 204 ruger on a defiance action that I picked up relatively cheap. From my research the round was marketed as a 500 yard and in coyote gun. ( which is probably pushing its limits) I think it will be right at home shooting Pdogs and chucks to 400.

My old 204 with 32vmax launches PDs inside 400.

Due to lack of industry support for the 20s and 17s, I think im pretty much over it. infact just listed all my 20 cal stuff for sale.

With so many heavier 224s available now, it’s getting hard for many to justify a 20 caliber anymore. That’s my assessment

I respectfully disagree. I love the low recoil you can stay on target and it can be very flat shooting.
I have a 20 TAC , 204 ruger, 223 tikka varmint, and a 22-250 I use for p dogs. Granted I don’t get as many shots as I would like but the 20’s get majority of the action along with the 223. I don’t even take the 22-250 out last time.

My little 20-221AI -so far has several kills @ 527 yds or under- w/ 32gr Nosler BT running 4012fps…
I’ve learned scope holds, used a range finder, now can range in the reticle itself-
I’ve never owned a 204 ruger, so I can’t help with that part-

The 22’s w/ heavy bullets-..:D yeah, let me know how that works out- sold all the 22 stuff, went all 20 cal stuff, for here on the farm.
