204 ruger trying 55 or 57 vlds wanting feed-back

I just got my PAC nor barrel. 1.250 strait 28 long 1.8 twist. I would like to try and get the 55's or 57 vlds from unmussig to shoot. I have 300 of unmussig bullets i will try them first. Has anyone tried just the 204 ruger AI with this set up. I would like to know what powder and bullet speed, just to get me in the ball park. The reamer is a pacific tool and gauge, Dave wanted to use .100 free bore. Any results would be great tell me what works and don't. The plan is to shoot p-dogs at 500 to 700 yards, and do some varmint shooting around the area. Its on a edge stock nightforce scope gun weights 20 pounds. Thanks for any in put on this project. Andy

Did you go with a SAAMI chamber or did you add a bit of freebore?

Regarding powders, I have been using H414 for the 55 gr Berger and BlackHole bullets in the 20 Grendel. The cartridge is close to the same volume (about 8% more) so I would guess that H414 is about optimum for your heavy bullets in the Ruger since QuickLoad indicates that I can go a tad slower for best velocity performance in the 20 Grendel.

A .204 AI, I am very interested in your project. Can you post a picture of your reamer print? How much water does the AI case hold? How many grooves in your barrel? What dies are you using to reload?

Please keep us posted on this project.....

I shoot the 55 grain berger in my .204 and is one of my favorite rifles. I have a 1:8 twist and I shoot IMR 8208XBR powder, 26 grains in summer and 26.5 in winter. I have killed coyotes with the gun at 700yards. My brother shot a 1.5" three shot group at 1000 with his. It is my go to gun for coyote hunting. working on a New one. A 20XC. It is quickly moving up the later to being the favorite. super flat shooting.. I built the rifle with a 25" barrel and found a load. 55Grain Bergers at 3850fps. But I shoot a suppressor, and I cut an inch off at a time and ended up at 20" barrel and still shooting 3650 with the 55 bergers. Not much hold over till after 500 yards. ;D ;D

What powder are you using in your 20XC and how are the 55 Bergers doing for you on coyotes I built a 20-250 shooting the 55's about the same vel as you haven't had a chance to try it on a coyote yet but have killed a pile of groundhogs with it

My brother and I have a matching pair of 20xc. We are using N550 powder till we can't get any more powder. But I have another gun I built that shoots H4350 very well. It is the Bomb on coyotes. We have not had one take a step. The longest kill was over 600 yards and it just hit the dirt.

I think the 32 gainers will come apart at that velocity and twist rate.
I will try to down load some picture of targets. but I do all my own gunsmithing. I started my own little shop in Meeker colorado. I try to keep a good supply of barrels on hand.

I love having a long range flat shooting gun and this baby is a dream. My budy has a 20-250 and cannot hold a candle to my 20xc. I have tried to convert him, but he is stuborn.

sorry I have not been on for a while. to bussy spinning metal off barrels

Willey Coyote--Are those 55 ber hard on the fur at close (under 250) ranges. I am looking for something to deal with those hung up coyotes but I don't want to be sewing windows on the close ones.
