.204 40gr scope suggestions

Love it! Clutter is better use of words. I love the "clutter" and the zero stop. I shoot both. Just a note about turret adjustments. Cranking the turret will eventually get you in trouble. Last week a buddy missed a once in a lifetime trophy ram in AZ because "he forgot to reset the turret" today he'd say "wish i had the clutter" Good shooting. Rick

DK, have you ever tried to shoot a pd on 32x when the mirage is bad. I think not and I think that most coyote hunters would not want 8x for their low end. Having to little or to much power is a bad thing which is why I say a middle of the road power would be best for both coyote and pdogs. 3x for calling and 15x for pdogs. jmo. MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL.

That's why you can turn it down to 8. The Sightron gives you the best of both worlds. You can turn it up or down as needed. They are very good glass and I have one on a Dasher for 1000 yard shooting. Hardly ever have to turn it down. Good glass helps a lot. It is as clear as a Nightforce Competition or at least close. At 8x I can still acquire moving targets. At 32 if there is no mirage or little and I can go out to 1500 plus yards. It is a real good scope with excellent glass for the money. Matt

I didn't know how AWESOME it was to use a high powered scope until I started working up a load for my 22-243 AI, using a bushnell 4200 on 32 power... WOW... I just fell in love with higher power scopes for everything.... and will NEVER go back to using anything under 20 power.

1+ for high power when wanted and for when conditions allow! Trying to mark your own shots using 10x at 500+ yards is a tough deal.

A 6-20 SCOPE IN A LEUPOLD-BUSHNELL ELITE 4200 OR WEAVER GRAND SLAM WITH VARMINT RETICLE SHOULD FIT THE BILL NICELY. YOU CAN ALWAYS LEAVE AT LOWER RANGE AND DIAL IT UP IF YOU NEED ITFOR MORE MAGNIFICATION.

I just don't see anyone shooting a 204 at 1000 yds let alone 1500 yds.
The point I was trying to make is the scope is really clear and if you can shoot 1000 yard BR in the summer without turning it down; it should work in a lot of hunting situations. I like the power because I can aim more precisely on a small target. I also like to see my hits. As far as a 204 goes my buddies have killed prairie dogs at over 900 yards with a 20 Vartarg. They regularly shoot them at 400 and 500 yards. Now these are custom heavy barreled guns with Nightforce scopes on them. They also shoot off of solid benches. I just prefer too have the power to see good. When conditions get bad you turn it down. Nothing beats watching the bullet strike or hitting him in the head when there is only a inch or so sticking out the hole at 400 yards or so. Matt

Varmintshooter Matt is right on about that sightron scope its clear at 50 power as the new Nightforce or the New VX-6 42x that I own! And shots at 1000 or more can be made with the little BB guns as I call them. I Remember a guy from North Carolina with a 22 Cheetah that was kicking butt at 1000 yards. So don't say it can't be done I've seen it. And another guy at our club that shot a 17cal. Don't know what case Matt may know. That shot 10 shot groups at 1000 that were 8"

The .20's (and the .17's) don't get a lot of the respect they are due. Probably because most aren't shot further than what most people think they are capable of. A little extra magnification in "reserve" never hurts.

What kind of price range is the OP looking at? All nice scopes mentioned but we don't know if he's looking to spend $200 or $2000.

I use Vortex Vipers 6.5-20x44s on my 204s. Have served me well shooting in several PD fields.

I took a chance on a Burris XTR II 8x40 and couldn't be happier, especially for the price. The zero stop works very well. I haven't ever needed the lit reticle but it seems to work well. In normal bright conditions it is every bit as clear and crisp as my Sightron SIII 8x32, but the Sightron shows out when it starts getting darker. It would be a tough choice if I had to pick between the two. The Burris appears to be a lot tougher, has zero stop, and I like the first focal plane. The Sightron weighs less and transmits light better. I like both reticles just fine. MOA2 on the Sightron, and the F class on the Burris.
