2018 NRA Rules Changes - Unofficial

A lot of these questions would be easily answered if the asker would simply open the rule book themselves and look up the relevant section number i.e. 3.4(a), 3.3.3(b).

so, the rule book states the following for an F-Open rifle:

F-Class Open Rifle (F-0) - A rifle restricted to a bore diameter no

larger than .35 caliber. (Attention is directed to safety fan limitations

of various ranges. Individual ranges may further restrict ammunition),

“Rail guns” and positive mechanical methods of returning

to the precise point of aim for the prior shot are not permitted. Any

safe, manually operated trigger is permitted. Any sighting system

is permitted, but it must be included in the rifle’s overall weight.

The provisions of Rules 3.16 and 3.16.1 apply to this definition.

(1) The rifle’s overall weight, including all attachments such as

sights and bipod, must not exceed 10 kilograms (approximately

22 pounds). An “attachment” also includes any external object,

other that the competitor and apparel, which recoils or partially

recoils with the rifle, or which is clamped, held, or joined in

any way to the rifle for each shot, or which even slightly raises

with the fi ring of the rifle from the rests).

(2) The width of the rifle’s forend shall not exceed 76mm (approximately

3 inches).

(3) The rifle must be fired in the prone position from the shoulder

of the competitor using rifle rests as defined in Rule 3.4.1(a)

And the new rule for the front rest states:

The area of contact between the front bag and the rifle's fore-end will not exceed 76mm x 76mm (2.99 inches x 2.99 inches).

My question is, does this mean the end of eared bags on the front rest since the width of the rifle forend is the same as the bag dimension?

That seems really, REALLY unlikely. If a change like that were to be introduced without warning, I think you'd have a revolt on your hands. My guess is just poor wording. No MD in his right mind would interpret that as "no side ears".

Ok, just my interpretation and I thought I would ask since the two measurements are exactly the same...if it were their intent, I could see everyone machining down their rifle forearms and bag makers designing a new narrow eared bag...thanks Jay

The stock contact rule is poorly worded. I would spell out the max with and length (although the need for a rule on length escapes me). They make it sound like 3x3 is just an example of a permissible Length x Width, and that 2x4.5 would also be allowed, which I gather is not the intent.

Also, I agree- the way it reads, ears count towards the contact area if they make contact with the stock. I very much doubt that is what they mean.
