2014 Campaign Has Begun

Finally on Saturday the temperature moderated and the wind speed was manageable here in eastern PA so guess where I headed - my favorite ghogs farms.

It was about as perfect day as you could imagine, low to no wind, bright sunshine, temperature in the low 70's.

I set up in the first field and about 4:15PM a large male came rolling out at 176 yards. Brought the Weatherby Supervarmint master 223 on to the shooting sticks, waited for the hog to turn board side then I sent the 50 grain Nosler. Heard the familiar "plunk" sound of the bullet hitting and the hog rolled over. First kill of the season, felt good. (I hope no PETA people are reading this :( )

About 5:00 PM I saw a head peak through brush in the same tree line about 100 yards down from where I shot the other hog. This guy was a lot more cautious. He sat there for about 10 minutes then came rolling out. This one was 141 yards out. I sent another Nosler and heard another "plunk". Two down and 2 hours still to go!

The field went cold so I hiked over to another field where there were a few new fresh holes dug out. At about 7:00 PM saw a head emerge from a hole 215 yards out. After several minutes the hog came out and stood on the mound by his hole. It was a beautiful sight, a classic ghog sight. I sent another Nosler and the hog disappeared. Shot felt good but didn't hear the "plunk" which I sometimes don't hear depending on where the shot hits. I waited until the sun began to fall and didn't see any at the other holes so I walked up the the one where I had shot at. Bingo, there he laid in the hole, a perfect shot middle of the upper chest.

Three ghogs down to start the 2014 campaign, my 43rd year of pursuing ghogs. Just can't get enough of it! :)

good shooting! we've had some warm spells in sw va, so the lead's been flying and the pigs been dying! i'm ahead of schedule with 12 thus far. smallest was 7.5 # and the largest a whopping 9 # 15 oz. hunting a new site and can hardly wait to go tomorrow.

I made it out on Saturday for the first time also. The Farmer was very glad to see me and was very adamant about wanting them all dead!!! I like to wait for the pups but the Farmer is the Boss. I watched several while we were talking at about 400 yards and hurried to get to my favorite fence post. One stood up and it ranged 425 but before shooting I wanted to check again, Dooh! Note to self, change the range finder batteries every year! They sure are spooky this time of year and didn't get a shot before it disappeared. Wasn't long before another came out down and feeding and I guessed 350, wrong it was 375! Mad at myself another came out at 400 and I guessed wrong again and went high! One comes out at 125(?) and that was a gimmie, 8.34 lbs.! Out comes the 400 again and I make corrections and went in the front and out between the rear legs and the little 3.82 lb.'er gave me a nice air show! It does indeed feel good to be out again and if I do my part my new .20-.223AI and the 55 grain Berger will have a great Season!

DANG. You guys sure are getting my trigger finger itchy. We've been in Ohio for 10 days now. Moving into a new (to us) home and finally getting settled in. Work bench and reloading bench are built. Blinds and wall decor hung. 3 acres of grass mowed once with a newly purchased zero turn mower. Trees all trimmed. Still lots of projects in the works. And NO loaded ammo. I'm hoping I can get started on loading ammo in the next day or two.

Glad you made it safe Bill! Haven't heard from you in a while and just figured you got all uppity after making it on the Bulletin! ;D
I'm sure you will get out and get some numbers soon. Hopefully I'll get these misses out of my system and get this guy cleaned out so he will release me! God I have some good Amish Farmer friends!

Nope, just busy driving to Ohio from Arizona and getting moved in.
I didn't even know I made the Bulletin. Maybe I should start reading it. ;)

I shot one a week ago but am now with out my gun cause it's at the smiths getting a second barrel put on. Sure hope I can get it back soon so I can bust a few more hogs before the grass gets to long to see them.

Some more teasers! ;) All with the .20-.223AI, the two at 135 and 154 yards were with fire forming loads using the 39 grain Blitzkings@3950 fps and the others were the 55 grain Berger@3640 fps-

Thursday@211 yards

Friday@316 yards

Friday@154 yards

And Friday@135 yards

Dang, you're cranking out some numbers already, MrM.

I finally got 25 g'hog loads loaded. Now to check 100 yard zero. The rifle just traveled 1906 miles in the back seat of a pickup, so I want to re-check zero.

And I need to load 50 long range steel competition loads, then begin load testing for my new Pierce action 6SLR.

i must be dreaming...3 on thursday(8#, 9# 2 oz and a huge 11# 5oz) all dropped instantly with a 68 gr cheek from my 6mmBR. Saturday at the horse farm and 2 pay the price. the larger very wary female taken at 127 yds through an opening in a small tree...9# 2 oz. the total for 2014 is TWENTY for april...at this rate i'll set a personal record.

Nice work lpreddick! Got two more tonight to put me at 8 so far in April. One at 134(chip shot) and one at 336. 2 MOA come up from 200 and the bullet went right where I was aiming! I have some areas on this farm were I can get 600 yards however the Chucks haven't cooperated yet. ;D

The 336 yard'er

Slipped out between work and my Granddaughter's Soccer game and got the "Chelsea Clinton" of the Groundhog world. The 6.32 lb. Sow fell out of the "Ugly Tree" and hit every branch on the way down! Just her head exposed at 130 yards but for my "Snakeskin" stocked 8tw .243AI with the 105 grain A-Max at 3200 fps it was easy pickin's. #9 for the Season and all I saw on this windy afternoon.
