2013 Arizona State Palma Championship

Allan.
The thing that really makes first place worth so much is to have one hot shootin' sumbitch right on your tail. With you there he knew he couldn't falter
Congrats to you both

LMAO, Thanks John. It was a lot of fun. I'm glad that I got to shoot with two great shooters, Steve Blair and David Gosnel. I'm learning more and more every day about what it takes to run with them ;) I'll get there, in time time ;D

Looks like some bad relays and some good relays to be on. Wind have a hard time making up it's mind whether to blow or not and which direction?

Here are the Day 3 scores. Note Steve Lockwood's truly outstanding 800 and 900 F-TR scores. The relay Steve and I shot (last) at 1000 was pretty bad and his score is not indicative of the hammering he gave the targets all three days. [br]
In Palma rifle, fellow Californian Jim O'Connell gave a demonstration of how to shoot consistently for success. Good job, Jim. Ryan Hayes, the biggest "Junior" I've seen, is someone to watch. Remember that name.

I travel with Steve Lockwood to matches out of state and not only is he a great guy but man, can he shoot! I think he is the guy to watch in FTR. Steve Blair is correct about that 1000 yard relay. Steve Lockwood and Steve Blair could have shot a national record, if they didn't get that relay. I know that's the way it goes. I was really rooting for them. There's always next year :D

Look at Steve Blair's 800 yard relay a 150 14X and he was under the weather. I told him, he should get sick more often ;). Great shooting to both Steve"s ;D

900yds on day 2 was the most confusing, befuddling crap that I have ever faced and 1000 was marginally better. You watch the prior relay fire, determine the mean condition...pretty std stuff. You have the patience to wait for that condition once your time starts and fire your 2 sighters with a best-guess estimate of the wind value, getting centered for record fire...and you never again see that condition during the entire string. What is more is that there is NO condition that appears as a constant. On average, it is a strategy that works. But not this weekend, at least not for me.

Sure was nice to see Mike Dunia, Doan Trevor, Bob Gustin and some of the old guys I used to shoot with. That was the real highlight of the event.

O'Connell coached his team impeccably. The man is definitely a wind God of the first order without peer.

In order to really appreciate the level of competition at this match, please direct your attention to the following table generated from the top 3 F-Open shooters' scores:

Competitor Score Percentage X-count Percentage

David Gosnell 99.556 63.7
Alan Rosenthal 99.111 50.4
Steve Blair 98.815 57.8

This is simply an outstanding level of shooting and although only F-Open shooters' scores were used to illustrate the point, it looks as though the folks in Conventional and F-TR also performed at an exceptionally high level. Well done everyone!

Thanks for the compliment, we had to earn many of those points in this match. The conditions were challenging to say the least. I had unexplained vertical Sunday which really hurt my X count. Steve Blair had very vertical shots at 1000 yards. I have shot with Steve many times and no one holds vertical like he does. It's actually very annoying at how good he holds vertical, lol ;)

Shooters,

The 2013 Arizona State Palma Championships has now become part of the rich history of this storied range, aka the Ben Avery Shooting Facility. With over 70 competitors from thirteen states our little event was very well attended and despite the cold temperatures and the fickle winds, some very good scores were fired. As usual I had my trusty Nikon with me and I put together a little pictorial of the match that can be viewed by clicking here http://s254.photobucket.com/user/rcurtis48/media/2013AZStatePalmaChampionship_zps2392b916.mp4.html?sort=3&o=0

If nothing else, the scores that David Gosnell, Match Winner and runner-up Allan Rosenthal put up in the F-Open division, over the three days of shooting, proves that in the right hands the 7MM's are still a potent caliber. David's 1344-86X effort is a new State record for the event and Allan's 1338-68X score was a full four points better than Steve Blair could muster with his much heavier recoiling 300WSM. Food for thought for those considering one of these calibers for FO competition.

Back in 2008, Steve Lockwood was a friend and co-worker who, at the time, was a serious paintball competitor. I remember how he always perked up when I would talk about some match or another and little by little I reeled him in to the point where I got him to join me at a club match. Well the rest they say is history as Steve has gone from borrowing a rifle five years ago, to getting a full blown Doan Trevor creation of his own and along the way has turned into one of Arizona's top F-TR shooters; underscored I might add by his wire to wire victory over runner-up Scott Harris in this Championship. In looking at the scores I would caution against resting on your laurels though Steve as Scott just seems to be getting better and better every match!

The winner of the Palma Rifle division needs no introduction. Bob Gustin has been winning matches for decades and in spite of falling short in each of the daily aggs, Bob's solid scoring over the three days earned him yet another victory to cap an incredibly successful year for the veteran shooter. Fellow Californian Brian Prescott was this years runner-up in the Championship with a fine 1337-55X. I would be remiss if I didn't acknowledge one very special accomplishment in the palma division. Fourteen year old Ryan Hayes, in his first palma match I might add, stunned the bondage bunch with a day two victory by virtue of a very well executed 448-25X effort and then followed that with a six down 444 on day three! One can only wonder that if this young man could have shot all three days would we have seen a different outcome in the grand? Only time will tell as we continue down the road but what a great start with the palma rifle and he doesn't even have his learners permit yet!

In the Team Championship the Blue Stars, consisting of Emil Kovan, Adrian Harris, Mike Dunia and Jim O'Connell put together a stellar score to win the Team Match! US Tactical Supply shooters, Greg Gamboa, Steven Powell, Robert Maust and Allen Spiker took the Silver and ASRPA Red squad of Doug Frerichs, Ken Nelson, Rick Curtis and Phil Hayes took the Bronze

Congratulations to the winners and thank you to everyone who came out to join us in this years Championship. The weather wasn't the best but I sincerely hope you enjoyed yourselves and I look forward to seeing you all back next year.

On behalf of the Arizona State Rifle and Pistol Association and the Desert Sharpshooters Rifle Club I want to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year!

A really great presentation Rick. Way better than I see from most matches.
Is there any chance of a benchrest style equipment list.
Thanls for a job well done

Thanks for the kind words John. It amazes me that in the not too distant past matches like this attracted TV and newspaper reporters, but somewhere along the way covering these events fell from favor. I personally feel that the competitors who go out and try there best in head to head competition and prevail, have a story that should be told. Lets face it even if you won every high power match you enter every year you will never get rich. What we do get is the recognition from our peers and when you come to one of my matches and win you get a nice keepsake as well as a cool pictorial ;D

By the way have you seen the BBC documentary on the Queens Prize from 1983? Here it is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AyKSGl0cEFM

Edited to include that I am working on getting an equipment list for the Berger.
