2013 Arizona State Palma Championship

The world class Ben Avery Shooting Facility will host the 2013 Arizona State Palma Championship, 6-8 December. There is still time to submit those entries. Take a look at the thread regarding the just completed Long Range Championship for a taste of what these events are like. If you can make it, you should. This is three full Palma matches over three days, a 135 shot tournament. You could better your long range classification in one tournament![br]

A really good match, Steve, I used to regularly attend this match when I was shooting Palma rifle. First time was on/about the year 2000. Loaded up my Palma rifle kit and a few of us caught a plane out of Nashville on $100-round-trip tickets. The match bulletin carried a note that there would be a "barbecue" on Saturday evening. (Ho-hum, just about all the major matches east of the Mississippi River do the same.) Come Saturday evening, we all get inside the clubhouse, and there are tables loaded down with all the fixins' for a regular barbecue, but instead of the usual "pork" there was an enormous pile of huge, thick, beautiful steaks!! And, folks marched outside to grill (I guess "barbecue" them in AZ talk) them on the cozy warm braziers...repeat trips for as many as one could eat. Well, I can honestly say that the first time I attended Mid's match, I went there purposely "to shoot"...thereafter, I went there "to eat", shooting was just incidental! Around 2005-06 though, Mid's superb kitchen help quit on him, the barbecue was dropped from the program, and the match was never the same again. Other things had been occurring, too. For a 3-day weekend of shooting, the weather (high winds or rain, or in combination) generally always cut it down it to just two days, and those $100-round trip plane tickets doubled, then tripled, etc. (Anymore, the "two-travel-day-closer", same date, five 20-shot-1000's Iron Man match, cold rain/snow, at Butner puts a twinkle in my eye, too!)

Just to clarify: This match is shot in Palma format, but is open to any High Power discipline. That includes: Service Rifle, Palma rifle, F-Open and F-TR. Trophy plaques will be awarded for each category and you may even get a few bucks back. ;) [br]
Weather guessers are currently forecasting 70°F and sunny for all three days. This is a great time of the year to be in Phoenix. Hope to see you there.

***CORRECTION*** Fixed rifle categories.

Actually Steve that is incorrect. The match program allows Service Rifle, Palma Rifle and the F Rifles
(See item 16 here https://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&pid=sites&srcid=ZGVmYXVsdGRvbWFpbnxkZXNlcnRzaGFycHNob290ZXJzfGd4Ojg3ZmQ0N2Y3Y2M1ZWQ3Ng

Also we are really pushing for team participation. There are some major team matches coming up in California early next year and of course at the Fullbore Nationals at Camp Perry. So get your F and Palma rifle teams together and start refining your game!

Saturday winds S at 12mph with gusts to 23mph. Sunday winds NNW at 12mph with gusts to 18mph. This is going to be FUN!!

;) Looks like on Saturday you will be hit in the face as targets blown out of the frames are coming at you, and hit in the back by them on Sunday as they come sailing back!!! 8) Good shooting!

You won't have that particular problem if you come up to Butner this weekend. Maybe some icicles and puddles but the targets will probably stay in the frames.

C'mon, Danny. You want to shoot it. Hop that flight. You'll only have to listen to Mid's sclerotic bitching when you get your score cards. What could be better than first relay in the thirties and the prospect of almost fifty by 1000? :o [br]
Ignore those Butner people. They're just trying to lure you up there for some nefarious purpose. ;)

Well, last evening, Jim Murphy and I decided that we did not like the 50% rain challenges for both days at Butner, so we have sheepishly pulled out of going to Butner.

The best part of that decision is that I am mostly loaded for the SWN now!

Certainly a change from the Mid-Range and XTC championships last week where the temps bumped into the 70'x and wind stayed less than 5 mph for most of the weekend.

But likely better than the 2011 Palma when it snowed Saturday night in west Phoenix. Sunday, it was 38° and ~15 mph north wind for first relay. :(

It is what it is and everyone must deal with it. My post was meant to prepare everyone for that which we will face. You bring shorts and muscle T's...you will likely freeze your arse.
