2000mr vs varget in 223

I ran outta varget and might look into 2000mr for my heavy 223 loads. Anybody have any experience with this powder?

I don't as of yet, but I am picking up 5 lbs of the stuff this weekend! From what I know, it is a lil slower burning than RL15. There are a couple of forum memebers that are using it (Matt P). Hopefully they will chime in. Matt says he is using in his rifle 27.0 grs and getting 2900 fps with the stuff. I like the idea that you get a very good load density with the powder. Being that it is a ball powder with supposidly the temp sensitivity of aa extruded powder. These are the qualities in 2000MR that I am looking for! Right now, I would say that with my current load using RL15 is not quite going that fast (2900). I am also curious about this powder in a couple of other cases as well!

I now use 2000MR exclusively for XTC and for Palma, all 223. The reason is nothing I have found can push a 90gr bullet faster. The accuracy is fine for my purposes. It is also better for 80gr bullets. Bullets lighter than 80gr can use different powders. I don't like changing powders in the middle of a match, thus I use this powder for 55gr and 75gr bullets, but its not optimal.

2000MR is very small grain, meters well, is very dense, and has high energy. Temperature sensitivity has been reported as 0.85fps/degree F. I have not verified this. I shoot in California so I don't get big temperature variations. My accuracy requirements are to hold the X-ring in an XTC match, which it does very nicely if I do my part. I have no experience with F-class or benchrest.

Well there is a match I Blakely, Ga that I am wanting to try this powder at, it is the first weekend of Nov. I am hoping that I will find a load that will exceed my current expectations with the RL15 powder that I am using now. I am currently using 25.0 grs of it under the Berger 90VLD.

Matt, thanks for stopping in and giving your view on the powder!

Ok sounds good thanks guys for the info. I am however shooting the 75s, but out of a 7 twist 28" tube, so it might be worth a shot! I could always jump to the 80s as well.

Yes , a bolt gun. Savage 12 BVSS.

I 've tried it in a 6BR with 70 Sierra BlitzKings and Hornady 75 V- Maxes looks like lots of potential.

Played around a little today with the 2000mr. I like it enough to give it a chance. If your guns not throated for the heavys dont waste your time imho. Velocity was higher than varget thats for sure, found a node around 3150 or so.

I have used both RL15 and 2000MR extensively. 2000MR is slower, far denser, meters better, and less temperature sensitive than RL15. Other than that, they are identical.
