200 gr Berger load testing.

Finally caught a pretty day. Palma brass,Federal gold medal match primers and Varget. Took loads from 42.6 grains to 44. I took 2 of each in .2 grain increment s mainly to check for pressure signs. Chrono'd each.

I know just 2 is not enough, bit if it won't group 2 ,no more is needed in my opinion.

Watched velocity come together at 43.2 and 43.4 grains. Less than 10 Fps between them and all 4 shots were one hole. Then velocity spread again.

Going back with 10 Rounds of 43.3.
Velocity was 2660-2670 for the four shots today.

Looks like this is going to be an easy round to tune. None of the groups were bad, just the two were literally one hole.

Honestly I could not tell much recoil difference between the 185 and the 200's.

30" barrel and free bore is set for 215's to get the bullet 60thou up past the neck junction in the case. Not sure what it measures as I sent three dummy rounds when chambered. It is about .010 jump though.

I have node at 42.7 gr and then again around 43.3. Velocity at my 42.7 is 2575ish. I don't see issues with recoil myself vs my old 185 hybrids load. These 200s flat out shoot

That's exactly where my Varget/200 gr load is at (43.3 gr) jumping .010........:)

Great share guys. Thanks.

FWIW using H4895 comparing to Varget on Juggs last year I found it took about a full grain more Varget to get to where I ended up (2835 fps, single digit SD and ES). 30" barrel, sounds like a slightly smaller chamber with .005" jump.

Anyway, on 200 Hybrids this past month I just settled at 43.2 of H4895 at 2732 low in the node (55 degrees out and temps going to go up before down). Jump testing looking short here again (.003 to .006). Coincidentally I was also feeling good at the node below this around 2675. Thinking more 1000 yard events this year I pressed on cautiously to see if I could get another 25 fps or so to end up where I'm at.

Just saying and it's a guess based on a comparison of two powders using another bullet so it's out there. I do plan on testing Varget myself next month (still a little paranoid about supply) so I'm not suggesting something I won't eventually do. Maybe there's another node there yet with another grain of Varget?

Wow, amazing that is almost "textbook" same for most people. Looking forward to this bullet.

Just gives you the warm fuzzies inside when you get one hole groups with a heavy bullet from a bipod!

CHLuke, I was really wanting 2700 Fps plus with the 200. At 44 grains I got 2700 but group was bigger and speeds for the 2 shots were not as close. Pressure wise?? I still have to inspect the cases under a magnified light. Looks like a see a very faint indication of ejector mark at 44 grains of Varget.

My 215 load last year got me ejector marks about %25 of the last match in the sun. Cases setting in the sun may not have helped. Shot one of my best scores with them but too hot to run that load in warm weather again

Not tried anything but Varget asvi have plenty of it and not much else.

Anybody using N150 with 200 hybrid?

I used N-150 in the past with my original FTR rifle i built with very good results. That barrel was a 28 inch Krieger (11 twist) that loved N-150 and 200 hybrids. I can't remember the exact powder charge off hand but it was a hair more than Varget as its a tad bit slower burning. It burns very clean and is really accurate. I was using large primer Lapua brass at that time with CCI BR2 primers.

My H4895 load with 200s is 42.9 gr and that gives me 2685 ish with stellar accuracy. Never tried the next sweet spot higher as i was worried about how it would do in summer time here. At the node i'm running i have zero issues whether its 35 or 95 degrees.

Jade, what is your barrel length?

Nice group. My buddy Craig Martin shot a 200-18X (FTR) at 600 yards in a monthly match a few months ago with Varget and 200s running 2665 ish. They flat out shoot! Unfortunately it wont be a new National record because it wasn't a registered match..........:(

Send my congratulations onto Craig! He's an amazing shooting! Very patient and executes great shots... It's unfortunate the shoot wasn't registered, but an amazing score none the less...!
