20 VarTarg vs 20 Practical

Considering 20 VarTarg on a CZ 527 action. I already have all reloading components excepting the dies. The 20 practical or 20 Tactical seem pretty popular as well.

A 204 Ruger already exist in my bag of tricks. Any compelling reason the 20 VarTarg may not be a good fit for me if the majority of my shooting will be done inside of 200 yards? 300 yards on occasion I suppose.

Thinking on a 11 twist & bullets up to 45 grain spire points. Any chance I should re-think the barrel twist?

20 Practical has a never ending source for brass. When I go to any range the brass is just there ready for me to pick up. Reloading is super easy. Redding set of S Bushing dies. No fire forming . The name fits. It just practical. Accuracy is incredible.. I and a friend built 4 of them. Lots of rounds down the tubes and still super accurate. Ours are all 12 twist shooting the 32 Grn. Vmaxs.

I bought a 20 Tactical reamer off FleaBay and got rid of my Vartarg...I love the Furball case, but either 221 or 20 Vartarg seems to need more work in getting them to shoot...the Tac was a one holer from the start...just my $.02

I agree though a Prac or Tac seems a bit redundant if you have a good shooting 204 ruger, however.

Do what you want though, you can't have too many. Hahaha

I dont get the brass thing people talk about, if you buy brass from the 2 on here you full length size just like any other cartridge. If you get your hands on 221 fireball neck it down just like 223 to make 20 prac and do load development.
Some of you are splitting hairs. I guarantee I can get new 221 fireball brass necked down to shoot as accurate as any 20P or any other 20 cal out there. Ive got them both and more to prove it.
Why is it when somebody specifically asks about a cartridge people pipe in and try and talk them out of it?

I like an efficient case-
The 20VT , 221FB … 1/2 powder of the bore blasters- yet barrel life is longer, bullets are in stock most of the time, feeds from mags, easy to tune !!!
Brass can be made from your old brass you got laying around..
Lots of options, think twice- think wrong-
20VT good to 600yds- know your wind dope.its been proven!!!
1-11” twist barrel get ya to the 40 gr bullets, seems that’s all offered currently..
Barrel length of 22”-28” be enough for anybody…

WIth what you have and want the 20 VT would

fit very nicely as a partner to your 204R. As for twist in the VT, 1/11 is most popular, but usually it will handle the 24, 32 & 39 gr bullets just fine. Over that i.e. 40-45 gr it is effy, but you will be more than satisfied with the 39 SBK's for you heavy weight in the VT. So go for it and enjoy.

SD guy, I'd also consider the 20-222. It kind of splits the difference between the 20VT and 20Prac. with regard to performance. Like the 20Prac it's a straight neck down and your done with brass prep. Dies are easy to get and less expensive.

Since you mentioned you're using a CZ 527 action feeding and extraction for both is a moot point but if you were using a SA Rem 700 unless you're using an action that came as something off the FB case they tend to not kick those little FB cases out very well.

As for twist rate 10 or 11 will serve you well and I'd probably go with whichever one I could get first.

Why burn 24gns of powder when 17 will do the same job? 20 Vartarg all day everyday.

Any reason(s) why the VT won't (iffy) shoot the 40's in an 11T vs the 204R w/ an 11T will shoot the 40's??

39's are hard to come by for the most part unless you're willing to pay to play.

It will depend on YOUR rifle, but

by in large, more often than not the 1/11 twist will not fully stabilize a 40 gr or heavier bullet, when it shoots, for what every reason the 39 SBK's perfect.
Just seems to work that way often.

Bill i have to disagree the 11 will shoot any 40 gr out there, if your a numbers guy run the Berger twist calculator on the 55 at 3730 at sea level I believe its 1.18 SG.
Now the Berger 40 is 1.29 at sea level at 3450. Ive shot custom 46gr out of 11 that did fine grain of bullet is not everything either length matters, there's alot of 12 that will shoot 39 BK
