20 Vartarg Scope question

Hey 20 Vartarg shooters, what power do you find yourself using with this the most, what scope would be a good fit given the range of this Vartarg cartridge, thanks

I've tried several different ones on the 20 Vartarg. The Swarovski Z5 5-25...great, but a bit much. The best for me in the Ground Squirrel fields has been the Swarovski Z5 3.5-18 with the BRX varmint reticle (not the BRH reticle) for normal 20VT ranges. Super glass, great eye relief, and the BRX reticle is perfect for these type critters in my opinion. 7315br

My Cooper has a Vortex Viper FFP 6-24. I don't care for it all being FFP. Scanning the rat fields, I usually use 6-10 power out to 100 yards. Further than that, I adjust the power setting upwards accordingly to my range at that time.

On my Remington I use the Nightforce SHV 5-20, 2nd FP with the MOAR reticle. Outstanding scope. Again, scanning the rat fields, I use 5-10 power out to 100 yards.

I use my 20vt for close range prairie dog shooting. I shoot from the truck driving in and out of dog towns. If there are significant close shots 300 and in I'll take it to the bench for awhile. One of my 204's will take over 300-600.
Out to 300 yards a 12x scope is plenty.

16 for me. But I also notice that the power knob usually stays around 12 for inside 300 work. 16 is good for PDs out to 500 or so IMO. My dad only uses 24 power or larger and I only shoot at 12 or 16 when on his guns.

I use a straight 10 Leupold it has target turret if I wanted to dial. I have a straight 12swfa on 22-250 and bust them out to 700. I typically only shoot the VT out to 300. 10x is plenty

Almost all my rat rifles wear Leupy VX3 6.5-20X 40mm LR w/VHR and their excellent factory installed M1 elevation turret for quick and positive field tweaking. All of this is purely subjective, and we all have our chosen systems. This is what has worked for me after a long rifle/scope evolution years in the making.

My 20VT on the bench having her way with Skippy and his pals.....

In the rat patch, my scopes usually see the most time set on 12X or thereabouts. We can always 'dial-up' when needed. We all use come-up charts and LRF's, so the hit ratio is usually quite high.

Get the best glass you like and can afford, your eyes deserve it.

I don't have a 20 VT but on my 20-222, since I don't consider it a super long range gun, have others better suited for that, I have a Vortex Razor HD LH 3-15x42 sitting on top. Glass is extremely good, and that's coming from someone that isn't a real big Vortex fan, and it makes for a really nice low profile LW setup. I have the exact same scope on one of my CZ 17 Hornets too.20-222.jpg

My 20VT scope is a Leupold 6-20x and is usually set at 20x in prairie dog towns. On other PD rifles that have 6-24x scopes I usually have those set at 20x or higher.

I insist on ffp on my higher power long range varmint rifles 20x and more. I can see no possible use for it inside of 400 yards or on 16x and less.

I highly suggest getting a Athlon Midas TAC 6-24x50. It's FFP, focuses down to 10Y, has great glass, a fine lined holdover reticle with small center dot, 10 mil knobs, a zero stop, super build quality, not long or heavy. Competes well with scopes much more expensive.
It's literally the best bang for the buck scope out there, period!!!!

Were are they made?

All of my 20 and 22cal varmint rifles wear leupold varmint hunters reticles on top. I bit the bullet back when it was only $75 to get leupold to change the reticle, so I sent in 6 at one time. Now when I switch back and forth between rifles, it's an easy transition.
My 20 Ackley Hornet, 20 killer bees, and 20 vartargs run 6.5 x 20s. My 20 tacticals, 20 practicals, 204's and 22cal's run 8.5 x 25. When shooting in the field , All windage and elevation adjustments are holdovers. Now the 6 mm caliber and up is a different story . All those rifles have Nightforce's on them and all adjustments are made in the scope with clicks. If I had to do it over again I'm not sure I'd be running so many Leopold's, but as the saying goes, I'm In Too Deep now.
Also I use the power ring on almost every shot, low-power when searching for a Target, high-power for destroying the target.

They are Chinese made.

I've met the owner of the factory that makes this higher end of Athlon scopes. This Co has the rep for producing higher quality optical products.
Also know the owner of Athlon.
Both have striven to bring the highest quality possible for the price point, the owner of the factory even going as far as purchasing the best machinery money can buy in 2018.
It's very apparent once a person takes this Midas TAC out of the box! Everything about the scope is just right giving the impression that it's a scope costing twice the price. I'm not exaggerating either.

I have an old friend not affiliated with Athlon at all. Last year he purchased 4 different scopes, all different brands, in the $400 to $700 range to try them out as a personal experiment to see how they all compared to each other. He sold two of them as soon as he could because they were unimpressive, has the Bushnell Nitro 6-24 left which he plans to sell, but likes the TAC so much more he's purchasing 3 more in 2020.

I'll be selling most of my scopes in 2020 to replace with the new Gen2 Athlon Ares BTR 4.5-27x50. They really outdid themselves with this G2 version, it's that good!!!! In fact I'm selling one of my S&B's, not that the S&B isn't superior but I don't need it like I used to.

I could go on and on but I think you get the point.
