20 vartarg bench rest gun, 100-200 yds

I've owned two Vartargs over the last few years, and still have one.....but am not at all sure why someone would choose that caliber for a 100-200 yard br gun?

What would be the advantages??

I'll be interested to see if anyone chimes in positively.

GREAT cartridge, though....for small varmints or game.

I have never gamed one in a match but I am about to receive my 20vt stock back from the clear coater with a full 3" forearm. Might try it at a match just to see.

Lord knows it's got all the bells and whistles

Borden BR dual port
Krieger 12 twist
Jewell
Speedy smithed
Shurley brothers stock

Should hang in there but I still doubt it can compete with a PPC

i know it couldn't win a comp against 6PPC's, but there is a bloke down here shooting a 220 beggs and finished in the top ten a few months back. I'm getting one built, 20VT that is, Panda micro port, lilja barrel 11 twist mcmillan stock. Just to be different.

I saw that boltman, but for the past 6 months I've tried to join the group but cannot. Ive been waiting for a conformation email from the group but to no avail.

same for me. if anybody knows somebody over there (saubier.com) to let know they have an issues with new people registering that would be helpful. this is what I get "you do not have permission to access this page"

My dad is just about to finish his benchrest Vartarg build --- Bat SV action, Mullerworks 11 twist barrel, Bruno/McMillan stock, Bix & Andy trigger, 45x Leupold. I'll post pictures when it is done. He plans to shoot it in registered benchrest competitions this fall.

My hunch is that the optimal 20 cal for these competitions is something closer to the vartarg turbo (slightly longer version based on shortened 222 lapua case). I believe that Harold M said the gunsmith who is now shooting the original LV vartarg build was now shooting a 20 vartarg + .100.

I've been on Saucier since '07....I post a note there raising the issue....FYI....

I would think with maybe a 35 grain Berger and some Lapua brass in a well built rifle a 20 VT could be competitive at 100 anyway. My VT seems to shoot very consistent (.3 - .4" 5 shot groups) with most 32 gr & the Berger 35 out of a 1:12 twist, and it is not a bench rest rig, but a carry gun with a #2 taper barrel. I would assume a full blown bench rig could beat that by a good margin.

Yes, the VarTarg has been campaigned in registered IBS matches. Ours did best with the 40 Berger (tried the 35 first). I managed a second place in one match. Full story is on Saubier; see link cited above. Wish more shooters would bring their 20s to matches.

MY rifle won't be ready till after christmas, but I'm stockpiling some Berger 40gn and some local made 35gn FB varmint.

I just got my rebarreled Tikka from the gunsmith the other day. Krieger 11 twist .232 neck 24" barrel. prepping the brass today and hoping to shoot it next week. Will be using 32gn SBK's with AR2207 powder, equivalent to H4198. Im thinking of making 3" front bag rider for the stock just to keep it that bit more steady.

I read that article Tiratore, thats what got me so excited about building one. Everyone shoots 6PPC and over here and its always the same blokes in the top 10 or 20. These blokes obviously have there guns tuned in to be so consistent in the leader board. So if i went down the 6PPC route id be competing with them and would finish way way down the list. Now, i will still be competing against these same leaders and will still finish way way down the leaderboard but i'll be shooting a different caliber of gun. I like to be different.

Gentleman in NY, at dunham Bay shot a 20 VT and wrote it up. He haunts Saubier and here, so, Harold, speak up.

I registered in late 2015 and have not got any response and sent multiple emails to have my account activated and no luck on Saubier. I can log in but can't post or reply to anything
