I've got a 20 vartarg custom build in process (early, started everything 2 weeks ago!). My smith has a reamer, but it's the Kindler original with a 0.374 spec base and 0.232 neck. I bought a box of Lapua brass and the Hornady FL sizer and seater set. Ran a couple pieces through the dies and all looks good. Seated a 40vmax as a dummy round and measured. 0.200 up from the base on both pieces (and the unsized 221 brass too) is all 0.373 and the neck with bullet seated is 0.231. Clearly I'll need to turn the necks if I use this reamer but I'm very concerned about the base measurement.
Is 0.001" total (1/2 thou per side) enough clearance at 0.200 from the base?
Since the dies aren't sizing the base on new brass, I assume that these dies will not work with the reamer (perhaps they are set to size to 0.375 for a 0.377 SAAMI spec 221 base?). Could I buy 223 Small Base dies and use them to squeeze down the base when the bolt starts to click? Does anyone know what small base dies could be used to size to 0.372?
