20 vartarg sizing question

You might wanna check the wood chuck den. Todd is the man on the var targ and can answer your questions and will rig you up right on brass prep and save you money in the long run. One stop shopping place as well and very reasonable pricing. PM me if interested on reamer specs at JGS. Just chambered up mine for no turn and 32 grainers. Sizing perfect on the redding S die as well. Bill

I form my 20 Vartarg from lapua 221 using a 20 vt Redding body die and. Redding neck bushing die.A light turn is required

Also have it chambered in a Sako A1 feeds slick as goose s$&@

The Sako action also feeds the 17 fireball like it was made for it

I talked to the folks at JGS and have a reamer ordered through them.

They recomended the base diameter of .3770 at the .2000 line and the neck at .2345. for mine. I also did the free bore at zero.

Now I need to reach out to Whidden to have a sizing die made, I'm thinking a non-bushing die would work better for initial forming so that the neck will be sized all the way to the shoulder.

I have sent my two Ruger #3's to Pac-nor to have 3 grove, 11 twist barrels fitted to them at 24"

Hopefully they will turn out nice, although I do anticipate some issues with the Ruger #3's in the accuracy department and will have to play around with the fore ends.

Your set of Whidden die/s will more than likely cure your issues and be a good investment. Bushing die is well worth the extra cost.
Another thing you should do or have, for issues like the larger base or that ring you talk about, is get a small base .223 or .204 die. Often when you use brass that has been fired in a semi-auto i.e. military/LE and want to use it, the base will be enlarged due to the chambering in their firearms.
Run it and any of you brass that developes a swollen base into that die ( pull the guts) taking the brass back down and then with firing it in your chamber you should not have any further issues like that. Even the new lapua brass can be ran into the small base die prior to using it in your reloading. Just a suggestion. Bill K
