20 Var Targ info.

Hi everyone,New guy to the forum needs some advise on the 20 Var Targ. Specifically, What kind accuracy can be expected at 100/300 yards? Is it difficult to find what works and what doesn't. How about twist rate and barrel length? I don't mind spending time at the loading bench to bring it all together but I don't want to wast my my time on a rag either. Thanks. DWM Jr.

Hello in reply to the message saying a new guy needs advice on what to expect from his 20 var targ. I also have a new 20 VT. I expect to mount my scope in about a week, and I hope to shoot the rifle by July 14. My son will be here for a visit. I plan to order dies and supplies today or tomorrow. Now I consider my greatest challenge to be making 20 vt brass from Fireball 221 brass. I hope to find a good load using Varget powder, which I have, but I have not selected bullets.
As to accuracy, I'm hoping for 1/2 inch group size.
Being new to this forum, I'm having trouble finding things. Who was the guy who asked the question about what to expect in accuracy? Thanks,
Lewis In Keota, OK

Lewbish,
If you will click on this link,

and scroll down to the Vatarg, I think that you will see that Varget is going to be too slow. I would think that in a good rifle, that you should be able to get under 3/8", over flags, with good conditions. I have a friend who has a .20 PPC barrel for a top level benchrest rifle. He has shot many groups in the ones.,no kidding!)To me, the .20 Vartarg looks like a scaled down 6 PPC, and should be able to keep up with one most of the time, all things being equal.

One of my buddies has a Cooper Phoenix in 20 VarTarg and he is shooting 32 grain Vmax bullets using H-4198 and N-120. He is getting consistant 3/8" groups at 100 yards. What is interesting is when there is no wind he is getting just about the same groups at 200 yards. Very easy to load for and I believe one of those inherently accurate cartridges.

Just my two cents worth,

Phasor

I've gotta a 20 VT...can not put it away...its a recyled 204 Pac Nor barrel w/12 twist & a finished length of 24" x 1.055" screwed into a s/shot Savage Accue trigger action..glass in Weaver 4-14 Tactical....3636 fps with 40 V max..I've tested the new 32 NBT..but the 40 V has more downrange effect...this little cartridge will pick p/dogs off the ground and flip them in the air..even at 400+ yds..I've run 500+ rds down the VT tube..so now this barrel is pushing 3000+ rds out..load development using H4198 & H322 both produced .50" or better w/five @ 100 yds....the weak link...the Rem 221 FB brass..my next 20 will be the 20 Practical..

I've had my Rem 700 VSSF in 20VT for a few months, and am having another Rem700 converted right now...will be ready in about a week.
I'm currently using AA1680, and am very satisfied with it. I've also had good results from RL7. Mine especially likes the Berger 35grs....Good Luck

Im using Hornady dies with Rem brass. 18.2grs of H4198 gets me 3550 with a 32Vmax. My rifle is a trued 700 with a Hart SS barrel and a Jewel trigger. This is one of the best shooting rifles I own. Less than 1/2 is easy for my setup.

The 20VT is a winner! I am now up to three Coopers in 20VT and they are all shooters. With 32gr. V-Max's and AA1680 I am getting great results. I am trying H4198 in one rifle as the 1680 load isn't as good as I would like. 20VT's on PD's are awesome!

I just completed a 20VT about 4 months ago. I had a good friend work up loads because I was short on time. The load that he found that shoots great is 20gr of H322 behind a 32gr vmax. It shots 5 shots into 1/2" -5/8" groups at about 3620 fps form a 24" Match Grade Machine 12 twist barrel. I love the gun. You will love yours if you can get your hands on the brass. A 20 Tacticle would be a great choice as well with the option of Lapua brass.
