20 Var Targ Build

I have an old Remington 700 ADL,Chrome Molly) action sitting in my safe which was once a 243 Win.

I want to convert it to a 20 Var Targ. This will be a squirrel gun so one hole five shot groups aren't what I'm after, I am after .5's though.

I have 3 build projects in the fire but I've moved this one to the head of the list with squirrel season coming on.

I intend to shoot heavier weight bullets, mainly 35gr but not heavier than 40gr.

What barrel would you put on this action and what twist given the info above?

The first thing you will need is a 223 bolt. Short .473 bolt faces are in short supply. Trading for a 223 should be easy. Trading the whole action would be best, that way your bolt and receiver numbers always match.

Here's a pic of my 20 VT on a s/shot Savage action...a recycled 204 barrel with a finished length of 24"...heavy Pac Nor barrel w/12 twist 3 groove...moly 40 V max is the only bullet I use...comes out at 3554 fps looking for fur...322 is the powder...brass..yes sucks I have 3-400 formed Rem Fireball cases..just finished forming 50 new pcs of 223 Win brass down to 20 VT...time consuming job...I really like the 20 VT...the 20 Practical is also interesting and lots faster....my #2 20 caliber...also a s/shot Savage...both on no taper barrels with large shank actions...

I was told any short action would work. Oh well.

Maybe I'll buy a SS action now and save the 243 action for another project. Can I do a 6.5x47 build on it?

I'm new to wildcats so please bear with me.

You can build a 6 or 6.5x47 on your 243 action. Lots of luck finding a 308 SS action. Maybe from an individual or buy a doner rifle. There are none available new as an action only.
