20 practical

Looking to build a 20 practical. Just trying to get some info on reamer specs. Going with 1-11 twist will mostly be shooting 32 to 40gr bullets. And will be useing lapua brass. Not looking to turn necks but still slightly on the fence with that. Just wanting to know whats works for you guys.

Call JGS and tell them to email you a print for Lapua brass zero freebore.
I cant remember exactly but you want .002 bigger at the .200 line vrs the one for Rem brass and .235 nk.instead of .232 or .233 for Rem brass thats if you want no turn anyway.

Lee sent me my custom 20p tapered crimp die. My AR in 20p the bullets would change seating depth after a couple load/unload cycles(not firing the round) even with 0.003 neck interference fit.

I have two 20P's, one is an Urban Rifleman prefit on a Savage action, and the other is an X-Caliber prefit on a R783 action. Both shoot just about anything I've tried in them, from 26g bullets up to 40g vmax. I did not, and still pretty much ignore the freebore topic for my purposes (pdogs & sage rats). I use the Hornady AOL measuring tool, and start with a 20 thousandths jump, and go from there.

No need to make this complicated. 1x brass works well, do a search on this site for 20P info, you'll have several hours to days of info to look over.

Theres nothing " complicated" about freebore. The 34 nightmares i shoot like either on the lands or into the lands some, so I want more of the bullet in the neck that I can get. The BR and PPC have been know for great accuracy because of the long neck with freebore in most 20 cals you only get about half the bullet in the neck with freebore and on the lands.

I rented a reamer from 4d rentals. I did not wanted to get complecated in the build. They only had one choice. I went with a 10 twist. I have shot 32 vmax and 40 vmax and both were good results. I stuck with the 40 vmax for now. This winter will try them out on coyotes. I did not go fancy on brass. Went with LC and federal. Shooting ranges are flooded with them so they were free of charge.

While turning necks isn't necessary to get pretty good accuracy, you will see improvement on this particular cartridge if you decide to do so later. Seems the smaller the neck, the better turning helps. I turn some of my 6mm and .223 brass, all of my .20 and .17 brass. The biggest returns come from those two small calibers. When deciding on your reamer, keep in mind that most varmint bullets like to jump a little for best accuracy.

Neck turning as mentioned may not be necessary but may gleen some. If I am serious and the throat is a no turn, just knocking off the high spots has helped in some instances. YMMV.

When I was PD hunting I used the 20Tactical and the 204. I had 4 of each caliber. I traveled twice a yr. My finding contrary to other calibers, the 20's liked a jump. When I started loading, I went the usual route and jammed and started backing out. Best of my memory around 20K I found it strange but who can argue w/what it is ??? LDS

I short chambered a .204 ruger and then took .100 off the .204 sizing die. Easy .20 tac/prac .223 brass sizes in one pass thru the die. Fireforms a 30 degree shoulder, ends up with around .002 neck clearance.

We built 4 20 Practicals using Savage FV actions. Shillen barrels (12 twist) shooting the 32 Grn Vmaxs. Rifle Basix Triggers and HS Precision Stocks. Great Varmint Rifles and our go to Caliber. Good Luck with what you choose.

Just shot my 20P for the first time. Wilson 10 twist, 26" on a manual AR. LC brass, did a ladder from 23.5 to 25.0 of N133 behind a 39BK. Hit 3847 with the 25.0 load. Accuracy is looking very promising.

Have shot my 204's from 600-1000 yards on low wind days below 10 mph,it is amazing the 40 V-Max bullets hang together

I've purchased 2 prefit barrels from The Urban Rifleman, one in 6BR and the other in 20 Practical. Both shoot really really well. I would buy another from him if I ever need one. I do not neck turn on either barrel.

I have had great success with my 20 Practical and 20 Sploder (20-223a) barrels. I have lots of group shots. No neck turn is required.
