20 practical with 12 twist

I know I should have never built a 12 twist to begin with. I can shoot 40 grain vmax's if I push them pretty hard. My question is this....if I load just above the point at which the bullets are keyholing will the bullet be unstable farther down range or is it once they are stable that's it they are stable until they lose steam on the big end of course. The answer really is to shoot lighter bullets and be done or order a 9 or 10 twist like I should haveto begin with.

What rifle is this .20 built on. I may be interested in purchasing it from you to help offset the cost of a proper twist. dedogs

It is built on a NO NUT Small shank savage Sir. I don't wanna sell it yet Ive only put 50 at most rounds down it. I was asking about the 40's stabilizing. It shoots the lighter bullets really well. It is a Shilen Chromoly barrel 1.250 diameter 26 in long kinda front heavy but I like it.

Very Respectfully

my two 12 twist/3 groove 20's..20 VT & 20PT both shoot

the 40 V max with no issues........fur flies........

I have a 20 vt Shilen 12 twist ss and it will shoot the 39's and 40's very well. I am pushing them at 3500 fps, have shot them out to 600 yds.

May want to try the 40 grain Bergers. Berger recommends a 12 twist or faster.

I shot 39 and 32or33/ grain Sierras blitzkings, Some dog towns and Varmegeddons.....all were with 26 grains of H335. tHE sIERRAS would flipping shoot now. This thing is a blast to shoot. It has a 26" 1.250 no taper barrel so it looks funny with that little pin hole in it. Cant wait to get on some coyotes soon. I only tested out to 100 yards no chrono and it shot 1/2 inch or better for all bullets same powder charge with new barrel. I like it.

Running 27 grains of h335 and it didn't do well, primers didn't fair to good but accuracy was still great. Ill check it again for twist rate. Its a Shilen barrel maybe its a 14 man I hope not. I got it to stabilize the 40 VMax with a max case of Varget compressed. I tried with a hot load of H335 but popping primers was an issue

There is an article in the "Daily Bulletin" archive that would be very interesting for you to read, if you haven't already. Check it out, there is way more info in that article than in the 20 cal sidebar article.
