20 practical vs 20 tactical

I’ve been shooting a 20 tactical for a few years, it’s a great caliber! One pass through a 20 tac die and you’re done. One thing I’ve noticed in 2 barrels (different manufacturers) is that the caliber must hide pressure really well or I get 2 very fast barrels. The sharper shoulder helps with brass growth, generally with barrel life slightly, and velocities/pressures, now that’s all to a small degree. The 20 prac is definitely more popular. The next one I’ll do is a 20-223ai when these barrels are toast

How does the performance of a 20tac or 20prac compare to a 20Vartarg? Accuracy and barrel life?

Vartarg is based on the 221 Fireball case, which is some shorter than 223 (less volume/speed). So the difference would be similar to 221 Fireball vs 223, or 17 Fireball vs 17 Rem.

Not a problem any longer, several companies have rods, jags, patches, etc. for 17-20 caliber bores now.
Pro shot for one, Hoppe's for another.

Don't forget all the other 20 cal stuff you will need if you dont shoot small caliber already. Cleaning rods are generally 22 cal, powder funnel, patches, jags, etc. I ended up in that exact situation when I built my 20p.

Yeah, but most multi-caliber stuff like funnels and cleaning rods are 22 and up. Its just a reminder that everything some may already have to load and clean with might not work with 20cal and might need to be purchased as well.

yup. was just at the range doing load development and forgot my specially made 20 cal funnel. what a pain working in the wild with native 22 and up drop tube...

Buddy has a 20P he built, 30” barrel. With CFE223 and a 40 grain Vmax it does what a 204 Ruger will easily.
