20 Practical Seater?

Can a standard .223 Remington seater die be used for seating bullets in the 20 Practical or do you really have to use the Competition seater?

I use the type S seater with the micrometer on top. I dare say a standard seater will work but for the sake of it, i got the type S as you need type S neck die for the smaller bushings. Got them in a kit as it was cheaper than buying seperate dies

It appears that is so.

I just got done looking thru the Redding Catalog and would have to buy extra dies outside of their grouped set to get what I want.

I already have 223 dies but the sizer is a run of the mill RCBS which will not do me any good with the 20 Practical.

Nope then your better off getting the type S neck die set. You will need at least a 223 FL die and the bushings to suit. I think they are 233 and 225 from memory. Get the ones that you dont need lube for as it gets messy. FL size the 223 case, then add the larger bushing, then the smallest bushing.

The comp seater is very good and more than worth the money.

You can get the type S necking die and use the same bushings in it if your going to neck size only. Im having my chamber reamed to suit a FL sized case so the bolt closes down nice and snug.

For what it's worth, I just tried out an RCBS 223 seater,the basic plain seating die) and seated some 20 cal bullets in some 20 Practical cases and it seems to work fine. Whether that works across the board for all other manufacturers seating dies I don't know, but it would not hurt to try it out. Most people like the flexibility and ease of setting bullet seating depth using the Redding competition micrometer seating adjuster on the competition seating die, but if you wind up using one load and one bullet all the time where you might leave your seater in the same place all the time, a basic seater die may be fine.


By the way, for an AR-15, do not ever use a neck sizing die only,always a full length sizing die only) - as neck sizing cases only is the surest way to have ammo jam in an AR-15 rifle.

I'm using the Forster Micrometer die also. I have dummy rounds loaded for all of the bullets I use. I set the die to zero, run the stem down to touch the bullet, which is seated to touch the lands, then I dial in what I need..
