20 practical load sugestion

I've been staring at a can of imr-4198 for a few day thinking if loading a few 40 grainers and LC brass. could someone recommend a starting weight to work up form, a d maybe some feedback on how this powder preformed for them. thanks guys

could someone recommend a starting weight to work up form

Just my personal opinion. I shoot mostly 32 gr bullets. But for 40 grain I would pick a slower burn rate powder. But I was frustrated by the lack of 40 gr 20P loads available. So I did a search and recorded all the available load data I could find for 20P, 204 Ruger, and 223 with 40 gr. bullets. I recognize these are both similar in water capacity.

So a max load for a 20P is around the starting load for 204 Ruger. Then I ran everything through QuickLoad, adjusting the powder burn rate (Ba) based on my actual experience with the powder lot I had on hand. Then the far right hand column is my actual results based on my powder.

All the normal disclaimers need to be applied, but it gave me a treasure trove of load data I could refer to in the future. If you don't understand anything in my summary, please ask!

Stay away from that powder. It's very fast and the kernels are extremely long making impossible to throw. Unless you have a RCBS Chargemaster you're gonna hate weighing each charge if loading hundreds of rounds for varmints

First of all, forget about the IMR 4198. The 4198 you want to use is Hodgden H4198. A good starting load for the 40's is 22.0 gr. with the bullet .005 or so into the lands.

Good shootin'. -Al

22.6gr of IMR 4198 was good for me in LC brass and the Nosler 40gr. Start at 22 and work up to around 23gr.

I ran 23.5 of imr 4198 under 32vmax for just about 4100fps. Was decently accurate.

Forget the 32-35 gr. bullets, if your barrel will stabilize the 40gr. Once upon a time when components were scarce IMR 4198 worked just fine. 22 grs. was max in my 11 tw Pac Nor barrel, Weaver/Fireball reamer print. As seen on this sight.4198 pressure spikes very quickly. Your starting load should be created carefully.
Love the cartridge.

I have used IMR 4198 and H 4198 and both work well. they are so much alike it is hard to tell them apart, in working up loads.
Another good powder for the 20 Practical if Exterminator. start loads can be found under the 20 cal sidebar and a article there and also in Kindler's "Terrific Twenties" book.

I use H-322 24.5 grs. with 40 gr. bullets in my 20 Practical. N-133 was also very good but 322 was more readily available and less expensive.

Thanks for all the suggestions fellas. I've been tinkering with 10x, some tac and just recently some h335. Ive shot a few nice groups but have not been able to replicate them. It's kinda weird. I'm about to try another prime, I've been loading cci450's and may try some 205's. Just curious about other components and like hearing what works well for others. Thanks and keep the good feedback coming.

Try standard primers. Magnums aren't needed on the 20P.

I'm using 10X with rem7.5 primers ...getting good accuracy and very good speed in one of my 20 Practicals
3850 fps. with 40 v-max and 11 twist...pac-Nor barrel. The other is Criterion barrel ...only 3625 fps. with
40 v-max and 11 twist...but the accuracy has been very good so that is where it stays...I might try some different
powder but with the accuracy I hate to change anything...:D.

Started using CCI 450 when the Wolfe small rifle magnum match primer disappeared.CCI 450 in all my small primer cartridges.

I love Benchmark Node is 25.5 for me with the 40 grain pills. CFE 223 also worked ok was a tad slow & buddies bitched about the smell so I had to switch away from it. Also Benchmark meters amazing as well within .2 grains all day on the Dillon

?? How are H-4198 & Benchmark different?

25.5 of Benchmark for me too

25.3 of H4895, BR4s, LC15 brass in a 26", 3 groove 11 twist X-Caliber. 3865fps measured with Labradar and Magspeed. Very accurate.
