20 BR

Does anyone out there have any information on loads and bullets for a 20BR? Any and all info is wellcome. Pete

Iam in the process of building a 20 BR -.195" short. It's being called the little stubby as it will be short and fat. In my opinion the 20 BR has too much powder capacity for the standard 20 caliber bullets unless you shoot heavy bullets, then you might as well go with the 22BR, and shoot the 50 grain bullets.

Just my opinion.

Mike, that sounds very interesting. How do you plan yo shorten the case? Do you have a reamer made up for this? What about dies? Pete

Pete I'm having Dave Kiff grind the reamer, Kevin Weaver from Weaver Rifles out of Peyton Colorado is putting it all together and he is going to be making the dies as well.
As for the cases, if you not familiar with Blaine Eddy's "Plate" you need to be, if you want to make some of these wildcats.
It uses a series of holes stepped down in size to decrease the neck diamater.
For this case's I'll be using lapua 6BR brass and I will need to push the shoulder back and will use a 7BR forming die shortened up some, and then will be running the cases through the plate. Here's what a 22BR .185" short looks like.

Send me an email if I can answer any more questions.

I shoot the 17BR, 20BR and 22BR on a switch barrel. The 17 shot into .108 for the first three shot group at 4496fps. The 20 shoots almost as well. I will get back with my load data later.

I'm looking for load data for a 20BR using Benchmark and 4895 with 40 grain bullets.

Can you help me out.

Try 28.5 gr of Benchmark. Have a 26" Krieger 1/12 with a tight neck chamber. The velocity should be close to 4000'ps when you get to 29gr.
Hope this helps.

Is anyone else having issues with excessive powder fouling in a .20 caliber barrel?

My .20 BR "sludges" up after 10 to 12 rounds and accuracy goes down hill.

I've tried everything from Benchmark to H414 and changed primers with very little success in reducing the amount of fouling.

I use Sweet's, Butches and Proshot along with Mercury Engine Tuner. Most of the time with these products, barrel cleaning isn't that bad.

The slower powders such as Varget, VV#N-140 and VV#150 leave a black tar residue that is a bear to get out.

It looks if I'm going to shoot a .20 caliber as a pdog gun it will have to be rechambered to .20-222.

Any one have any ideas?????

I go 50 rounds in between cleaning with my 20BR in the field. I shoot one box of ammo then clean. Easy to keep tracj that way. If I go longer than 50 then I will start to get slight hard carbon fowling in front of the throat, which I remove with Iosso. I use N133 which is very clean burning. You would think that it might be a tad fast for this cartridge but it works well for me.

I had a 17 Rem that required cleaning after 10 rounds to maintain accuracy. This is why I no longer have a 17 centerfire. It seems the .20 caliber hole is just big enough to avoid the powder fowling problems I had with my 17 centerfire.

I will say that now that I have tried quite a few 20s I think the sweet spot for case capacity for the 40 gr. bullets is the 20 PPC. The 20 BR just has too much un-needed capacity for the 40s.

Did your gun develop accuracy issues after 10 to 12 rounds....such as 2 to 4 shots in one hole and then flip a
flyer about 3/4" out of the group? My will get silly like this and after cleaning shoot bug holes for about 6 to 8 shots and then loose accuracy again.

I have been thinking the same thing about the extra case capacity and are considering shortening the chamber depth to a .200 short .20 BR to get the case capacity more in line with a faster powder such as VV#n-135 or 133.

The gun won't make a pdog gun with this type of cleaning requirements.

Any comments???

My 17 Rem would just open up. It would go from a 5 shot bug hole group to 1/2" then 1" It would happen very quickly after the first 5 shot group. Not flyers, but overall larger groups.

Thanks for the information.

My .20 BR will open up to about 1 inch groups if I keep shooting and the pressure gets a little too high at about 15 rounds.

After doing some more research I've decided to rechamber the gun into a .200 short BR.

Likewise, shoot N133 in my 20BR. No excessive fouling occured for the first 1000 rounds!!
Copper fouling is the main problem after that amount. A mixture of Boreshine and TM solution cleans it up good.
I s'pose if you shoot formula 1 in the twenties your gonna burn tyres.

I re-chambered to a .20 caliber 200 short BR and modified dies and case formed 20 cases.

A quick trip to the range gave promising results, shooting a 40 gr. Hornady with 21.5 grs of Benchmark that clocked 3145 avg with an ES of 29. Accuracy was .234, .247 & .249 @100 yds.

I shot 26 rounds without any powder or copper fouling.

I'll know more after next Saturday.

I can now say that a .20 caliber .200 short BR is one sweet shooting cartridge.

To date the rifle is shooting in the low to mid .2's @ 100 yards and less than an inch @ 200 yards when I watch the wind flags and do my part. Berger 40 grain bullets and Vihtavouri N-135 really made the difference.

The last chronograph info was shot with Vihtavouri N-135 with and avgerage of 3554 and an SD of 9.

There is hardly any powder fouling and I have been able to fire 28 rounds without flyers or loss of accuracy.

I try as soon as my grandson comes over with his camera phone or whatever it is.

May need some help as I've never posted pictures before.
