20-250 data

Hi guys,

I am currently building a 20-250 10twist barrel and looking to shoot the 39sbk or 40vmax.

Could you guys please share your data?

powder and charge
Barrel length and twist
Bullet
Velocity

thanks

I had a rifle in 20BR with a 10twist. The 39 sbk came apart above 4000fps. I had no trouble going 4200 with the 40 Vmax.

I now have a 20-250 with 9twist. I have not tried 40's. Early testing with Badger Bob 46.5 and 55grain bullets show remarkable long range accuracy with moderate powder charges. Testing is now suspended until spring.
I have not checked veracity but I can report 6" groups at 1000 and 8" at 1200 in early development.

Hi hotshot,

what powder and charge was the 40vmax in the BR and barrel length?

it sounds like your onto a winner with the 55’s in the 20-250

H4350 36.9 gr with Berger 55 gr in 1x9 twist PacNor at 3850fps. Built mine to shoot 1000 yards. Like most x-250s shouldn't have an issue getting your 40 grain pills to shoot.

I have some test loads with H4350 but I didn't dare put that much in. I'm trying to be very conservative in my testing to preserve barrel life. I have gone over 3500 with a moderate load of H414.
Scooby, I honestly don't remember for sure how much 8208 I was using in the 20BR but it was relatively mild and shooting good groups with 39 and 40 grain bullets at around 3900. I went one more grain and 39's went poof 40's shot well so I went one more grain and they shot well again but pressure signs were considerable. Tac had good groups too and a little more velocity as I remember.

I've had good luck with RL15 in my 20 BRAI with Berger 55's Badger Bob's 55' and 46.5.
I've gotta try H4895 but it shoots so well with 15.

I have some BB 50's but I really don't like to use them up because Bob can't get anymore jackets to make them. The 46.5 shoots in the .1's at 100 yards from my rifle. I can't wait to test them at long range this spring.
This really is a ridiculous cartridge but I'm enjoying it.
I call mine a 200 Savage because when I say 20-250 most people think I stuttered when trying to say 22-250.

To add to the fray...LOL! As Sherm said, I too have used RL-15 the most through the years in the larger 20 caliber cases. A comment germanlongbow made a while back got me to try H4350 in the 20-250. It is very consistent and gives me more velocity with excellent accuracy (mid 1's) with a 10- twist Kreiger. I only shoot the 55 gr Berger in the 20-250 and above 4500' elevation. I've made several PD kills with that set-up now past a 1000 yds. Barrel life is another subject...LOL! 7315br

I am in the waiting game for mine as well. It has been in one piece since late november and waiting for warmer weather to start testing. dont dare start at 0 degrees when most of the shooting will take place above 75 degrees

I use 38 grains of R17 behind a 50 grain bullet and 37.5 behind the 55s

17.5” barrel

50s at 3600
55s at 3525

Not quite what you are asking but, H-335 shoots excellent in my 20 Practical with 40 gr. Vmax.

Great velocity from the short barrel, thanks for the info

A few years ago I had a 20-250 that finished at 23” and 50s ran 3700, 55s at 3600.

Those loads weren’t as heavy as what I’m currently using.

I think if I had the 23” barrel now and used my current loads the 55 would be near 3725-50 and the 50 would be near 3800.

Fun cartridge but hard on barrels.

Well the day came that i finally got to shot my 20-250. Its built in a M77 action with a 1-9 bartlien barrel at 26 inches topped with a leupold vx-6 7-42. I was looking for the jug of H-4350 that to start with but not finding it i decide to use IMR 4350 being that was easily found. 35 gr to start with and when up to 37.5 on the 55's. speed was around 3500 and went up to 3725 and the pressure signs were starting to show so i stopped there. A good node was at 35 and 37 grains and accuracy was good at 3500 but opened up at 37. but still not bad. Then with abit of digging again, i found the h-4350 and tested that. started at 35 and went to 37 grs. the accuracy was really nice at 35 gr but the speed fell 150 fps vs the IMR. The chill came back in the air and chased me away for today.. But I will clean and check things over and try again asap. going to try the 40's too
