20-22 calibers

tdoyka

oh crap!!! better buy another one.
i'm thinking of setting up my encore in a long range(400-500yards). the barrel will be 24 -26 inches and .850 inches wide(pro hunter). i have a 20 vartarg(16 1/4"long mgm barrel), a 223 rem in savage model 12 so i am looking for something different. it could be a 20 tactical, 20 classic, 20 ppc, 224 Texas Trophy hunter , 22-6mm rem ack imp http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g154/HotRodAl52/20Classic005.jpg
wildcats don't really bother me, a stroke gave me all the time i need i'm 40 years old and the right half of my body is about 15-20% good.
the encore lets me have one shot, (.2 and .3 at 100yds 6.5creedmoor 16 1/4", mgm barrel) so i don't think i a bit hampered. i'll let you guys decide on a caliber, wildcat or standerd, and what size barrel!

Sounds like you've got the medium to light stuff covered. I vote 224 TTH.

Of course, I'm from Lubbock and none of the others have "texas" in the name..

Have you looked at the .20 Grendel?

The cartridge was designed with the AR in mind, but would likely suit your needs just fine. The current implementation has an 8-twist barrel to allow 55 & 60 gr bullets to get good 400 - 500 yard wind resistance. The numbers suggest it will outperform .308 Win long range target loads at 1,000 yards, but I haven't had a chance to verify.

It will sit between the 20 PPC and 20 BR in velocities for the same bullets and load intensities.

You can read about it at http://shootersnotes.com/articles/20-grendel/

I would look at something with a .378 case head and a straight body and maybe even a 40 degree shoulder. This will keep bolt(not really a bolt) thrust as low as possible. The 40 degree shoulder is supposed to reduce case collapse and resultant excessive headspace on the hammer strike. That said I would look at a .20-.223AI, .223AI, .204, .22-.204 and the likes. Run a slow twist in either caliber to handle the heavier bullets to help with the wind. JMHO and food for thought. ;)

My gunsmith just finished up my second 22-204, Xr-100 action w/a 26" Broughton 5C 8 twist. 75 gr Amax are scooting right along at 3200fps and there's still have room for more. The only kicker is the most of the cartridges you listed have dies available. I had a Redding 204 FL Type S die opened up for the 22 cal and had a Forster 22 hornet micrometer seater reamed with my chamber reamer.

If you're wanting flat out hauling, the 224 TTH/22-6mm would fit the bill. My gunsmith shoots a 22-6mm w/ 75 gr amax and they're going about 3500 fps. It's his go to coyote gun.

My 22-204 @ 625 yds, 4 shot group, the lower hit was my cold bore shot.
