22-250 ai

tdoyka

oh crap!!! better buy another one.
i have a 20 vartarg(16 1/4" mgm heavy barrel in t/c encore) and a 223 rem(savage m12) what i would like next is a 22-250 ai. it will be in a tc encore, and a barrel will be a 27" mgm heavy barrel. bullets should be 60-75gr(still deciding). groundhogs, foxes, and coyotes(no furs) out to 400+ yards.

what should the rifle twist be? 1in8" or 1in9"

ackley improved is just my thing, i know, but what the heck!
if i missed something, please excuse me, right side of my body and left side of my brain is disabled. ;D

Although my 9tw stabilizes the 75 grain A-Max at .223 Remington velocities I believe an 8tw is recommended. The Encore will appreciate the AI version for the decrease in bolt thrust due to the straighter case walls. Have you thought about the .225 Winchester or JDJ's improved version(.226 JDJ?)? The rimmed cartridge I think is preferred in break opens. Brass may be an issue and perhaps you have already considered this. JMHO Good luck in your endeavors, ;)

I would go 8 twist.

What kind of velocity and groups out of the 20 vartarg with the 16 1/4 Encore are you getting?

18.6gr of h4198
.2-.3" at 100 yards for 3 shots
i gotta get a chrono! probably 3300 fps

I had a few 22-250's

1-14 34-55 lead core bullets
1-12 34-63 lead core bullets
1-9 22-250Ai 34-75 Lead core bullets. the 75 AMax no-go (53 V-Max @ 3900+fps ) most accurate.

I have a 22-250ai in a 1-9 kreiger #17 varmint profile 26in. I shoot 75 a-max or 75 berger at 3650 fps with RL17 powder. H 4350 is next best at 3500. Both shoot 3/8 in groups at 100.

I build quite a few 22-250AI's, any where from 14 twist to 9. The latest one was on a Savage with a short 9 twist, re-chambered Savage sporter barrel. This is a 22in rather light barrel. We haven't found anything that it wont stabilize up to and including 90gr Sierra MK's. I myself shot a 22-243AI with a 9 twist Shaw barrel. It to has no trouble with the 80 and 90gr Sierra MK's. Talking with Sierra the twist suggestions on there box's of heavy 22 bullets are figured for 223 velocity's.
