1st chamber caliber question

Hi all-- Well I've got some .224 barrel blanks for use to chamber my first rifle barrel(s) I have a R700SA Action with .473 bolt face. Trying to decide what caliber to start with. Was going to go with .22br however I have heard you need to bush your firing pin with this one.--Is that correct? I dont really want to mess with that right now. 22-250 would be an option. I have never had a pierced primer with my 22-250s. Any info or other caliber suggestions for .473 bf would be appreciated.
Thanks Hoz

223 Ackley Improved, 220 Swift, 22BR, 22PPC (requires a .440 bolthead), and my favorite, the 22-250.

You don't have many choices, and yes it's probably best to bush the firing pin with the BR.

Hope this helps, the 223AI, & the 22-250 are about the best choices unless you bush your firing pin.

Dennis

If’n by “223 Ackley Improved” you're talkin' 223 Remington Ackley Improved, it’d need a .378” bolt face, right?

My .02: What twist on your barrels? Bullet lengths/weights desired to shoot would be a determining factor in caliber selection. Plus, it's best to bush the firing pin on ALL 700s. They are notoriously sloppy fits. I've had Gre-Tan do all of mine. Good luck with your selection.

Thanks for the info fellas. It helps me. 12 twist on these barrels. Don't really have any specific uses in mind for them. Just using them for my chambering class. Thanks Much. Hoz

Run the 22BR. Not 22/250 barrel burning velocities, but way more inherently accurate due to case design. Go with no turn neck chamber. Case making is simple, simply run 6BR brass into a 22BR die. I made a form die due to simple fact my Redding type S die did not allow unturned brass enter though the opening. Any Non bushing die should work. Not sure where you need a firing pin bushed in order to shoot a 22BR. Granted 99% of Remingtons could benefit from a nice fitting firing pin, but not an absolute necessity to chamber in 22BR.

Thanks for the input ridgeway. I just got done checking to firing pin hole and pin on the action I'm using. Pin is .073 but fit to hole is very close. I like the idea of the inherent accuracy of the 22br and have a couple 22-250s but no 22br so I think I will try the 22br.

22 caliber is twist dependent so make twist and free bore part of ordering the reamer .
Good choice . Larry

I have had two 6br's and one 22 br on Remington actions. Never bushed the firing pin, and shot, functioned, etc just fine....

Tony.

Thanks for that info Tony Based on the replies to this thread I dont feel the need to bush my firing pin holes.

savagedasher Thanks for the advice on ordering the reamer that helped me This barrel is a 12 twist and Id be happy shooting 52 to 55s out of it. How would you recommend I get the reamer ground?

YES, the 223 & 223AI take the same bolthead - .378

My bad, I need to slow down while reading my books. the 223 & 223AI take the same bolthead, the .378 . I corrected the original post as well.
