1988 270 Win Remington M700

I must have missed the recoil stipulation. At 15 the lad could already be "big enough to eat hay" as my dad would say.

There is no stipulation on recoil, I was just suggesting two great rounds that happen to be low on the recoil chart . Did you see anything mentioned about the size of his Son and tolerance or love of recoil ?

Of course not, since nothing was mentioned. o_O And that's why I wondered why low recoil was specifically injected into the discussion. I wouldn't assume a 15-year-old boy was recoil-shy unless the father raised the issue, as one naturally would when asking for cartridge suggestions.

Let me dumb it down for you, I mentioned two great rounds . Lack of recoil for ANYONE is a bonus . Simple enough ?

270 gets it done. Why rebarrel? I have a couple of 270's older than that and they still shoot. I use em at huntin season so they don't get many rounds through them.. How do you know the barrel is bad? If it is at all?

I bought the rifle from my brothers coworker back in 2012. At the time I didn't ask him how many shots he's put through the barrel. Since 2012 I've put a little over 2100 rounds through the barrel. It stopped grouping with the same load even if I played with seating depth. It would just be nice to have a barrel that shoots for a young boy that is up and coming.

Has your Son shot the .270 much ? Are you going to do the work or send it out ? I ask because I have had great luck with Remage barrels , and they can be had in just about every chambering you may desire.

270 Winchester, 700BDL Remington... Kinda hard to make the PERFECT RIFLE better;)
I've got two great 700s. My 270 is a butter-smooth early M77. But many feel a 270 Win is only truly at home inside a pre-'64 Model 70.

wow,,,,that is a lot of rounds for a .270 ,,,,,you definatly are ready for a new bbl,,,,Roger

6.5-06. Easy neck down of brass, better bullet selection than 270 by a wide margin, flatter shooting with the same or less recoil.

PM, Albany Mountain, get a factory take off, for a low cost budget build. Your personal round count should demand a replacement barrel. Further, if it ain't broke don't fix it, the 270Winchester is a great round. For me in 3 different rifles, it has been surprisingly accurate, when barrel temps are closely monitored. For me as a hunter, the first cold bore shot is critical. My rifles do not like long firing long strings at a target, that is not what they were made for. There are plenty of bullets to select from, no matter what color the box is. 40deep you have the foundation of an excellent hunting rifle. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

25-06 !
Drop microphone, leaves the stage.

No really. This is a great cartridge for beginners.
*Light recoil.
*Flat trajectory.
*Eliminate hold over guessing out 300 yds.
*Ring steel plates all day without recoil fatigue.
*Factory ammo loaded in a wide selection.
*From woodchucks - Mule dear.
*Only down side, it’s kind of loud report, but the up side is it will train to not flinch at loud muzzle reports.

Jack O'Conner was right. 270 Win. is a great cartridge. If I had to have just one caliber to hunt in Texas, which is where I live and hunt, it would be a 270 Win hands down.
