1970 rem 40x crom barrell 6x47 conversion ?

just came on a rem 40x 1970's version 2oz trigger, 28" crom bbl, in 6x47 based on the 222rem mag case.

i believe it has a 1x14 twist, and at that time 69gr Sierra matchking was the bullet of choice.

barrel looks good though throat is showing some drop off, i am thinking of taking 1" of muzzel, 1" off chamber and going 6BR.

your thoughts on project, and bullets for PD as i have only used .224 on dogs.

Thanks for your thoughts
Bob

The 6x47 (222 mag) is .378 head dia. the 6mmBR is .473 head dia. the conversion will also require a bolt face change. That's a lot of rework ,or buy a bolt from Dave Kiff.

Bob,

I'd give 'er a spin in present form, unless you want to go to the expense of a new bolt or opening yours up to fit the BR case. Load up some 55 grain Ballistic Tips and it will dish out some thump on the dogs.

I wore out a barrel in 6x47 IMP on dogs. The BR will give more velocity, but the 47 has it's own cool factor.

Thanks fellows for your input, i knew about the bolt problem, as some years ago i had Bobby Hart build a 221fb 40x on a large bolt action for dogs, great gun,

I think i will go looking for brass. Alf what velocity/bullet, powder did you use on the imp version, that also seems to be an alternative. i do think i will shorten the bbl.crown etc.

I used the 55 BT's with the old surplus AA-2230-C powder, which is a twin to the current AA-2460. The barrel was one of my "wore out" PPC's rechambered. Velocity was right at 3300 in the 21 inch tube. Not a hot load, as I never did full length sized the brass. I abused that barrel and still got another 7500 rounds out of it. The 6's just seemed to punt the dogs a little bit harder that the 22's. All are still entertaining......
