Rem 40x in original 6x47 to 6br?

I have an early 40x with cromoly bbl, 28" that has had very little shooting, it is in the original 6x47 (222m opened to 6mm) factory chamber.

very accurate, but am thinking of converting to 6br for PD use.
the twist is 14" i believe and i am wondering have any of you made such a convesion, should the twist handle the 55-70gr balistic tips?

i know the bolt face wil need to be opened and sako extractor installed.

I believe that the barrel will hyave to be set back some and certainly the bolt opened up. Maybe a 6PPC no turn neck could be another thought. I'm shooting a 68 gr BT at 3485 fps out of a 22 in barrel. You may want to send the bolt to Gre-Tan and get it bushed to a .062 firing pin to stop the cratering that many remingtons produce.

Did you ever think of keeping the 6x47 as is and just buy a Remington 40XB in 6mm BR? After all there's no crime in owning more than one of them! At least I hope not as I have nine of them!! :o

I may be nostalgic and maybe I hold onto antiquated technology simply because I find enjoyment in using the same cartridges that got the accuracy shooting sports started. But I wouldn't even consider hacking up an original 40X barrel that is already chambered for a great old round. It's rifles like that which you own that got this whole game started back years ago, and you have a factory original and want to butcher it? I just don't see the point in cutting up a piece of the past when you can just go and buy what you are looking for without sacrificing a piece of history.

There are probably very few original 40X's left from the "good old days", and there is probably a collector somewhere that would love to own your rifle just the way it is.Why not consider buying a new rifle and maybe let the one you have go to someone who will enjoy owning an original 40X that hasn't been chopped, hacked and rebarreled?
Why you would want to get rid of the current chambering, which is perfectly capable of doing what you need, to go with something everyone has and can be bought new?

But to get back to your question, yes you can rechamber it to 6BR if you cut off most of the old chamber and set the barrel back.

I think you should reform some 222mag brass and load some rounds for what you have. You should be able to push 55 grainers to around 3400fps and 65's well over 3000.

I have checked the 55/70gr velocities and they are very close to the 6br, the reason to consider changing is the 6x47 is not as easy to keep consistant (i shot 2 of them in BR in the 1970s) and the case capacity vs bore is low, thus the loads are more critical for top velocity/accurcy.

I used my own 70's made with Sierra jackets in Clarance Deitch dies and 23.5gr of imr4198, a winning combo at the time.

if i rebbl i would go to 22br but was trying to save the bbl cost - thank each of you for your input
