17m2 roughing reamer

How do roughing reamers differ from finishing reamers? Would it be ok to use a small roughing reamer this size as a finishing reamer?

Roughing reamers are rough! Sorry, da' debil made me say it.

Roughing reamers are called that because they are rough, duh), undersized, and designed to hog out most of the steel of the chamber so you don't waste the life of your "finishing reamers".

The finishing reamers bring the chamber up to final size and put the smooth finish on it.

You cannot use a roughing reamer to make a usable chamber.

Robor,
Reamers are expensive, that's why I always made my own. Also to save your "rougher", you can use step drill bits to hog out most of the stock instead of using the rougher, then a skim bore to true up the concentricity because in some cases they wander. Believe me, in the long run it saves. If the reamers get dull, have them spray welded or chrome plated. This will add 10X to its life. I only had the finishers done like this, but carbide was used and then lapped on a universal. It gave a real nice finish to a V32. More .02

Thanks all. Savageguy offered my a really good deal on this rougher and I just had to check and see if i could use it without a finisher. He did tell me he thought they were .0035-.004 undersized. I email PTG so see if they had a spec or what, they responded that roughers are made -.009. So theres no way possible to use a rougher as a finisher. Thanks all, I learn something new every day. I have dealt with savageguy previously and he is a pleasure to deal with if he has a reamer to fit your needs.

I have a 17M2 finish reamer.

My brother used it to put a shot out 17 Rem Rem700 take off barrel on a $25 Marlin gunshow special 22 rimfire.

It gets great groups, but now he tells me that it takes three rounds to kill a prairie dog.

what does it all mean?
The ground squirrel is the target species.
