17? thats no fun

I bought my 17hmr because of all the hype it was getting. All the things i had read about the round were very appealing to a avid varmint hunter, good in camp gun. its know where near as accurate as id hoped it to be, I'm thinking of rebarreling it if i can?
its a savage 93 any ideas?

BigLonnie,

I have the very same gun and mine shoots like a house of fire....Only with Hornady ammo....It will shoot other brands ok but not great. Are your scope bases and rings tight? Are your actions screws tight? Is your scope good shape?

Bag setup stable? Shooting over Flags?

These are just a few things that have given me huge problems in the past..

Biglonnie my Savage 9317 HMR likes the 20 gr XTP. We own 2 of these Savage rifles one with an accutrigger the other has a Rifle Basix trigger and they are ridiculously accurate. For fun we shoot at screw on bottle caps at a hundred yards, we rarely miss unless we misread the wind.

We put inexpensive scopes on these guns and we regret it. I am definitely going to a better scope when I get a chance. The scopes do not do the rifles justice.

Don't give up on this rifle, all my shooting buddies have one of these 9317's and I haven't heard a bad report from them.

Our local gun dealer tells me he sells one Savage 17HMR for every other gun he sells.

Good luck with yours.

thank you guys. i tried two scope's one has bin on 3 different guns that i have and it never did work right i put a new one on and it did help. I was thinking of trying the BSA sweet 17 scope, but i have not tried the 20gr ammo yet. would you go for a BSA sweet 17 or have you?

The BSA sweet 17 did not have a good writeup in the American Rifleman issue,?). I'd personally go with-Weaver,Sightron,Nikon-any of these are a mid priced scope that will serve your needs well. Don't spend your money on something you're going to regret later. I put a Weaver on mine-gave it to my grandson-he's deadly with it! Share your sport-Steve

Biglonnie, BSA sweet 17's are what we have on ours. At short range,50yds) they are ok but at 100 they do not have enough clarity if you are shooting into shade or if you have dim light conditions.

Go with a better scope if you can, you will get a lot more out of your rifle if you do.

You have got to try every load made. Like all rimfires, they are very load specific... what mine likes, yours may hate and vice versa. With CCI my 17/22 mag shoots 1-2"+ @ 100yds. With Remmy it is .5-.75" routinely.

And the Savage is also subject to how good a trigger it has, mine in .22 mag was awful!) and bedding. Bedding alone can improve groups dramatically.

most savages, that you read about on other forums, seem to work best with 20 grainers. I'll also bet your stock is not freefloated, especially when it starts to get hot...

What kind of groups are you shooting? I don't really think you shood expect to get same hole accuracy outta a .17HMR. I wouldn't spend the money or time to rebarrel one. If it really does not shoot good just go and buy another one. My Marlin shoots around 3/4" at 100yrds. I've yet to try the 20 XTP, but I've herd that savages love 'em. Right now I shoot the CCI TNT's and they're awsome!

I have the same gun mine likes the Rem stuff, Ihave the BSA sweet 17 6-18 and love it, have shot it to 316yds and it is right on the money. take out the scope base screws and blue locktight them mine came lose several times!
