17 HMr questions

Greetings guys !!
I'm new to the board and new to the 17 HM also. Actually i was introduced to it at the range today by a buddy of mine. He was going on about how great it was and i had only shot .22 rim, .223 and 6.5x55, so its brand new to me.
Anyway to the point, is the Savage model 93r17-bvss a good place to start ? I know Savages rep has soared the last few years but i just wanted to hear some first hand intelligent input before i ordered. If anyone has other suggestions for a first rifle i am all ears.
Can anyone tell me proper cleaning technique for this caliber ? The only thing in .17 that i have ever read of was the .17 fireball i think it was and i was told it was a tough nut with the copper build up if I'm remembering right.
Also what is a good ammo choice for target and varmint ?
If this topic has been brought up before, my apologies.
Thanks for any help.

Bones507 The Savage is a great place to start if you are looking for an entry level .17HMR. I have one of the first ones that came out,no accu-trigger) but put a rifle basix trigger in it and it rivals the the 93/17 that my son just bought with accu-trigger.

All the ammunition that we have shot has been extremely good. If you are going to be shooting small stuff the 17 gr ballistic tips are great, if you are going to use it on anything else go with the 20gr stuff.

Either way you will love the accuracy the Savage gives you.

Good Luck.

I find the 17M2 making more sense...$4 a box less for ammo....very effective out to 200 yds with the right shooter & rifle/scope combo....an honest 2100 fps from a LR cartridge....available in Savage & CZ....the two I have are BVSS Savage....yes I bought a spare !

I wound up ordering the savage today. Paid $295 for it, seemed like a good price. I almost got the Marlin but then after reading about how the savage trigger is better i figured why mess around ? Im going to have to change the trigger in the marlin and thats another $100-150 so buy the right gun the first time.
Does anyone here measure thickness of cases on the 17,s ? Sinclair has the case measure that works for .22 and .17 and i was wonderng if anyone used it to what success.
Thanks for the replys.

Bones the moderator has posted here about measuring some of the rimfire ammunition. You could go back and look at some of his posts.

All the 17 hmr ammo that i have shot has been extremely consistent. My Savage will shoot every brand and type into less than 3/4 of inch at 100 yds.

Just read on another site that the HM2 was discontinued.

I almost forgot. Where can i get a rod guide for the Savage 93 ? I looked in the sinclair catalog and they didnt have one listed for that model. Also i am using the midway rod guide for the 10/22, is there a better one out there cause something tells me this one isnt the best.

The production of some 17HM2 rifles has been discountinued. However the round is still being produced. However, there is considerable "excess inventory" right now among all brands. Eley has cut back production until existing supplies are depleted. FYI, Eley makes Eley and Remington 17 Mach 2. CCI makes all the other brands--Hornady, Federal, and CCI.

Stoney Point makes a RF guide to fit the 93 Savage...got mine from Midway...a tad pricey...Savage continues production of the 17M2...blue/syn with heavy barrel or same with skinny barrel..both with Accue triggers...CZ also in the 452...I bought 4K rds of Eley M2...don't wanna run low......

I still havent gotten my rifle yet as it hasnt come in but can somebody tell me the proper break in method for a .17 ?
Also whats the best rod to use and does anyone use sweets to get rid of the copper or is it not necessary ?
I dont want to go messing the barrel up right off the bat doing the wrong things.

Not a 17HMR, but I have a 17 Mach2. I have been very happy with a combination of Dewey coated rod, Dewey 17 cal pierce tip jag, and Lucas cleaning rod guide. We've tried various solvents. Something that is an aggressive carbon cutter seems to work best. Copper doesn't seem to be a big problem. Our barrels do seem to perform best clean, and some brushing is necessary. If you put your solvent in a squeeze bottom with a tapered, tubular tip so you can squirt the solvent right in from the breech or muzzle that will be most effective. A 17-cal brush or patch doesn't carry much liquid. You can get these bottles at lab supply stores. They are sometimes called "wash bottles".

copper should not be a prob for your 17, it should deposit very little to none. There just isn't enough heat generated, nor is there much copper for the tiny lands to grab onto, there isn't much surface bearing going on there!! i did break mine in, with my typical break in, which is, clean and lube after every shot for 5 shots, then repeat, after every fifth shot, for 25 shots. That should be plenty.
Also, there is at least 9 diff types of 17 ammo out there, I suggest you try them all. 3 kinds of cci, 3 of horny, 2 of feddy, 1 of remmy, 1 of Sellier % Bellot, and one of Winny. I was about to wrap a 100 dollar Rossi, kids rifle around a tree, because i spent 140 dollars on all the diff ammo, it would not shoot any of it, any good. Until I got to the last box, the Winchester.
Suddenly, I'm hitting shotgun shells at 50 yds with it, and I'm talking the 410 shells.
