17 Remington

I am going to rebarrel my Rem 788 to 17 Rem.What would the best barrel length to realize the performance of the 17 Remington? Thanks Catman

I think a 24in. tube is a good universal length so that would be my choice.

Anything in the 24-26" range should work, I would opt for the longer option just in case you decide to set it back and rechambered it to something else later on.

Catman ,if you haven’t bought your barrel yet check out Saubiers classifieds,DTucker has a Shilen 9 twist and he is down to 300.It is chambered for 17 Remington and a coned bolt 700 fired once to test.
At that price you can still afford to have it fit to your action,it’s 27 long so room for whatever length you choose.Good luck.BTW my 17Mach1V rifle is a Shilen that is 27” and it shoots great. No dog in this hunt, just thought it is a good deal.

I have a new blank, 28" Shilen 9 twist HV I'd sell. If anybody is interested just message me.

I love reading through these threads and then all of a sudden..( bam).. you guys are killing me hahahaha..
I wounder if a 40" barrel would have a negative effect on velocity..hmmm??..

Catman, What are you planning to shoot with it? Paper and rodents are one thing, but if you are hunting fur I would say 20-22. I'm getting 3900+ out of a 22" 10 twist shooting 25gr Bergers and it's hell on coyotes. I can't see needing more for the distances I shoot. (under 300 most of the time)

Planning on coyotes,Fox,crows,coons. Catman

I'd think a 24" is all you need. Saying that, 22" would be a better length for hunting. If you are a reloader you could go shorter and use faster powders. I wouldn't go under 20" unless I was going to run a suppressor. Anything over 26" is going to be heavy and awkward in the woods. I made that mistake.

I re-tubed(PacNor) mine to 6X47L and ran the factory contour at the chamber end down to .850 then straight to 24". I stuck it in a Stocky's thumbhole laminate and swapped the trigger with a Timney. The stock forearm limited me to .850" and it looks and handles beautiful. I believe anymore than 24" would look out of place on a factory or Stocky's stock. JMHO

I own a 27 inch Lilja in .17 Remington. I think that is a good compromise. A 24 inch would be a flame thrower. I would choose a "Fireball" chamber for a 24 inch tube. I own one of those too. The "9 twist" suggestion is a good one. Stick to the heavy for caliber bullets for the .17 Remington. Leave the light bullets for smaller cases. You can get the 25gr bullets to go almost as fast as the 20 gr from the spacious 17 Remington case with enough barrel. I like Remington 7.5 primers and IMR-8208 powder.
