17 remington .085 short

I just had a 17 Rem chambered up .085" short so I could make brass out of cheap available 223 brass, plus I just wanted it. Anyone here short one or have load data? Or know this wildcats name, I would bet someone has done this before. With the headspace shorter the cartridge has less volumn

So you shortened the headspace? You'll still have the same long neck and shoulder angle then? Sounds like a 17-222 almost. I'd say call it what ever you want to! I had thought about using a 17 rem reamer and a 222 gauge to do a 17-222. Didn't know about the taper though.

Sounds like your reloading plan is safe. I'm wracking my brain trying to figure out the purpose of this cartridge. Are you trying to solve a magazine issue?

no, just wanted to use cheap easy to find 223 brass, since the shoulder/ headspace is now different, I can, plus there is no feeding issues like some have with a 17 FB .

Basically a 17 Tactical has been created. It has a tad more volume then the 17 Remington. Performance will be identical to the 17 REM. Reamers are pretty prolific. I have a couple using Black Hole Weaponry barrels. I just use 17 Remington load data. Redding Type S bushing FL 223 sizing die is used with two bushings. I do run the 223 cases through a gutted 223 die for an initial step then two bushings. I also load the 20 Tac and the 20 Prac so I had all the stuff on board anyway.

You've done basically the same thing that I did with a .204 Ruger reamer run in to .223 headspace. The difference between a .223 headspace gauge and a .204 R gauge is .105. I chambered it up using a .223 gauge with the .204 R reamer. Neck down .223 brass and have at it. Slightly different shoulder angle and body taper than the 20 Practical. I did this chamber because when the .204 R first came out you couldn't get good brass so I bought .223 Lapua brass and it's worked out quite well.
In the case capacity that you're dealing with dropping down 2 grains and load testing will get you where you want to go safely.

Found a nice load with Varget and CCI450's. Shoots the 25 bergers in dime sized and smaller groups @ 100 yds, 25 Hornady HPs under MOA
