204 - 17 Rem brass

Hey fella's just a thought have any of you necked and pushed the shoulders back on 204 brass to 17 Rem? I tried some 223 brass but the necks were way too short and was just thinking the 204 brass is much cheaper than the 17 Rem not to mention easier to find. Let me know if anyone has had any luck doing this, the informatio would be greatly appreciated! Later,

Kirk

See I've heard the same thing that it was based off the 223 but I don't think it was or if it was I don't see how! the OAL of a 17 Remington is 1.796" and the 223 Remington has an OAL of 1.760" this is case length so the 17 Remington case is .036" longer than the 223 Remington case. If the 17 Remington was based off the 223 case HOW do I stretch the case .036"? now the 204 or 222 Mags case measures 1.850"

If the case was based off the 223 please let me know how to stretch it .036" so I can use my extra 223 brass. Later,

Kirk

I borrowed a few cases from my buddy with a 204 and just for giggles ran them though my 17 Rem FL sizer die with lots of slickum' and the first one I trashed! I backed the sizer up some and tried again, lowed the die and ran it through again, then dropped the die to the shell holder and ran it again and believe it or not it worked! loaded a bullet and made a dummy round and everything functioned as is supposed to. Now I just need to measure the case capacity to be sure it's the same or how much I need to reduce my loads and make a range trip to see how thing work.

The 17-223 is a heck of a reasonable wildcat round and I know a couple of guys that shoot them, I know a guy that has a 17-222 that is a pretty sweet little round also but I went the can get easy over the shelf route and I got the 17 Rem and I have to say it's a wonderful little rifle that has replaced my 22-250 for varmint hunting. Thanks fella's! Later,

Kirk

I used to make brass out of .204 brass for my 17 rem because Rem. brass is so bad. I got my info from silverfox on saubier This is from his post and I did just like he said and the brass came out fine. I currently shoot a 17-204 and my slow loads move kindlers 30 grain golds at right around 4100 fps. Here is the info on making the 17 rem brass.

1. used a Redding .17 Remington #1 Form die for the first step
2. run casing up into a Redding .17 Remington trim die
3. trim those casings to 1.810" to .1815"
4. run the casings up into a Forster .17 Remington full length die. After this trim the casings to preferred length.

Yeah Silverfox is the reason I have a 17 Remington, he gave me that little needed push to get me over the fence ;D he's a heck of a nice guy with a boatload of information on the 17 Remington. Thanks,

Kirk

I went the 204-17 Rem route a lot simpler.....I took 204 brass and annealed it on the kitchen stove ( just discolored it to about
the 223 shoulder area......I then ran it into a 222 die without the expander ball.........I use Imperial sizing wax.......then without
re-lubing but leaving remaining wax ran them into a Hornady 17
Rem die.......no lube dents,no wrinkles, no over thick necks but did need to trim them...These jokers wanting $60.00 a hundred for 17 Rem is just plain stupid, especially when a few bins over there's 204's for $24.00 a hundred.......and Remington introduces the 17 Fireball and charges the same
$60.00 a hundred for brass?????? just plain stupid but this will
beat the sheister system bent on obstructing recreational shooting........
