17- mach 2 conversion on 10-22

Has anybody had positive results with converting 10-22 to 17 mach 2. Clark used to do it but quit, so I ordered a barrel and heavy bolt from EAB. They warned that certain ammo would split cases but my experience is that everybrand I tried would occasionally pepper you with hot stuff. The thing shoots pretty well but you better wear protective clothing and eye protection. I haven't tried any new ammo lately. Any ideas?

I converted one but had to do some modifications to slow down the bolt. It won't shoot CCI or Hornady present day manufacture ammo without filling your face with spent powder. Eley is the only ammo that works and it doesn't work all the time. If you have a thick skin and can stand multiple condescending replies from their army of thread killers, try Rimfire Central for more info on how some have been modified to work.

Increased mass in the bolt assembly will be the main player helped by a heavier hammer spring but not so much with a heavier recoil spring whose function is to store energy for returning the bolt mass to battery in a timely fashion. You must maintain a clean chamber like every 50 rounds, if it even makes it that far. A little filth will hold the round short of fully chambering then when it's fired they like to blow out at any unsupported case.

Go to RFC and look back at the threads from the start on HM2 conversions. Boom..Boom. Boom!!!! For every one tghat works there are many out of battery blow ups. Usually it only ruins a mag, sometimes the stock. I would not hold my hand on the mag when shooting. Most of failure is a dirty chamber, but some are within the first few shot on a clean barrel/chamber. Do you really need a semi-auto in a round that is almost impossible to buy?

+1 on Pat's post. I don't shoot any more than 20 rounds before it needs to be cleaned or BOOM BOOM BOOM!!!! ;D & Yep, I blew up a 10 round magazine.

Does anyone need a jack handle, I guess that is all the 17 mach 2 - 10-22 stainless barrel is good for. I should have heeded Jim Clarks advice and steered clear of this mess but it seemed too cool to pass up so Eabco sold me the barrel and the heavy bolt and they claimed with the right ammo it would do o k. I guess they aren't scared of lawsuits or they have a full time lawyer. I shot 10 rounds of the ammo they said would not blow up then got on bench and started shooting it. I shoot lefty so the second round blew up and peppered me with hot stuff. Thank goodness for shooting glasses. Luckily no magazine blowups. Those guys must be reloading too hot. Just kidding. I tried all sorts of ammo and all would occasionally split a case. I am putting my 22 lr barrel back on and wait for someone to come up with a fix or quit making the ammo.

To bad you did not get the prior post's read, before you tried to put your eye out! :'( The reason the HM2 failed, and it has, is that it won't work in a semi auto. Before anyone goes off on that, I have Marlin 917V SS, and plenty of ammo, which is good, it has not been a success. I am glad you did not hurt anything, but your pride. FYI, the barrel WILL sell, if you put it out for sale on RFC or GB.

I, unlike eabco, could not in good faith sell something that might maim you. I did check eabco out and they no longer sell them. They had to get rid of inventory when they told me that they worked good with some ammo.i ain,t found that stuff yet.I guess I could put a warning label on it but I don,t want some blind guy with two fingers showing up at my house.

They are not that hard to adapt to a 77/22, Marlin or a Savage bolt gun. I have a GM barrel that slides right into a Savage MKII with a nice tight fit. It needs a longer tenion, but that will be easy. Throw the bolt handle away if you like, but not the barrel.

There’s the PWS toggle action if you wanna stay with the 10/22 action’s footprint. It’s a straight pull bolt action that’ll fire only when the bolt is latched in battery. Done rite the 10/22 will work if the necessary mass is added to the bolt assembly, preferably with all the increase in the bolt and none of it left hanging off to the side in the charging handle. It’ll run right with any decent HM2 ammo but will still take only a tiny bit of filth in the chamber to leave unsupported case hanging out back waiting to blow.

Had a friend that made up a bunch of 80% receivers that were set up to take the 22LR, 17HMR2, 22Mag, and 17HMR. It was supplied with a tungsten bolt. Works great. He did put the project on hold to enjoy raising his 3 daughters. 2 may be in college now. I hope he gets back to this project.

A 10/22 receiver? ChiefDave on RFC was talking about something like that years ago and I figured he was full of **it because of some of the other things he did

Brian went as Aleaddict on the home gunsmith forum and Accuratereloading forum. I haven't been in touch with Brian in about 3 years and lost his email during a hard drive crash. I swapped Brian out of one, but didn't get the tungsten bolt. I gave it to a friend. He is working very slow on it. Brad has a pretty nice website showing his projects.

You can see pics of his progress on his rifle and his 1936 Cord streetrod. May be a small pic of the Monarch 10EE that I bought from him.

There was a company, and I think is the same ones the feds just raided a little while back, that had a big group buy on 80% 10/22 receivers, and offered them drilled for mounts and with Pic rails, both anodized and raw.

I was at the range one day and saw a rimfire rifle (22 LR) explode and parts everywhere. I was surprised at the way that rifle came apart. Was a brand -new Marlin. I think about that when I shoot my Volquartson .17 HMR semi-auto that occasionally expands the bases of brass into a bell-shape. Seems these high energy cases in .17 (of any size) are very temperamental due to the short pressure curve. I'd be very leery of modifying a rifle to try to make a safe, functioning rifle. Seems the manufacturers have not been able to do it more often than not.

I bought a conversion kit for 10/22 YEARS ago and got too scared to try it after reading so many horror stories.
Sold it at a loss. (like everything I sell)
