Did Ruger discontinue their 17 Hornet?Since CZ stopped production of their 527's I think about the only manufacture chambering something in 17 Hornet is Savage.
I haven't seen any new 17 Hornet ammo anywhere in a long time.
I don't know what your budget is, but for the price of what some of these 17 hornets go for when they become available is way more than what they're worth. (CZ) I would look into building something custom, why pay 3 times the retail amount and end up with something that's "just ok".I have been burning up local gun shops and pawn shops and the grand stink gun shows. Can’t find a hornet rifle anywhere. I can run across ammo but no rifle
I forgot all about Ruger making the 77/17HH. You hardly ever see them but I believe Ruger still makes one too.Did Ruger discontinue their 17 Hornet?
That’s exactly where I’m at with it. I am a big CZ fan, I have had several, including the 17 hornet, I thought they were a great value for the money before the prices inflated. That’s exactly where I’m at with it. I know they wasn’t pricey when they came out
I have none of the issues of what you speak. There were lots of the brass years ago that had crimped primer pockets that was one and done. As long as I don't try to make it into a .17FB, and load to 3600 with 20 grain vmax, I am getting good case life. Is the brass Lapua? No. Will it do what a Vartarg will do? No, but I in mild wind, I am getting 300-350 yd shots on Pdogs with regularity. It's not a BR round, nor is it meant to be, but if you can get by with 3/8-1/2" groups, it's a fun little round.I am big CZ fan, I have had several, including the 17 hornet, I thought they were a great value for the money before the prices inflated.
The 17 hornet it self is very limited proformance round, its very finicky to load for, achieving consistent accuracy can be frustrating, the brass quality just isn't there, loose primer pockets and inconsistencies are common, the cartridge is ok cool, but if you just have to have one, then have one.
In hine sight, I would suggest building a 20 vartarg, this thing has everything going for it, its very efficient round using only about 18 grs of powder, brass quality is excellent, proformance and
accuracy is unbelievable, you can even buy brass ready to load. plus it opens up a wide range a available options as far as actions and or rifles to work with. just my two cents
They made two different models, the "American" which was more of a 21.5 inch sporter weight barrel and the "Varmint" which was a heavier contour at 24 inches long.were the CZ 527 s available in different barrel weights/ contours?
I have one here I haven’t looked at in a while and it looks heavier, like a varmint weight?
Just goes to show you, CZ had a real winner on their hands, then they got rid of it. Shame on them.I don't know what your budget is, but for the price of what some of these 17 hornets go for when they become available is way more than what they're worth. I wish I had another 527 LH, but at the prices they now go for...not likely to happen. In 2019 I was in position to purchase CZ at a discounted price. I asked for a 17 Hornet in the Varmint model and it wasn't currently available. I replied a standard model would be ok and it wasn't available either. Then I asked if I could at least get a 527 action in the Hornet bolt face and was told it wasn't available either. 3 or 4 months later I was notified that all 3 forms were now available so I bought all 3 knowing that the opportunity might never come my way again. I already own a 527 American in 22 Hornet which is incredible and wanted another 527.
It had to be the 17 because I was already addicted to the caliber and I had spent a couple years regretting my choice of the Savage model 25 I owned in 17 Hornet. Talk about a shame. Savage had every opportunity to build the model 25 into a gem and instead created a plastic broom handle with a trigger. The only thing that gun had going for it was it's accuracy in spite of their lack luster attempt.
My 527 Varmint in 17 Hornet is everything the Savage could have been and then some. I switched out to a Boyd's thumbhole on it and it's stellar sitting on the prairie dog bench. The American version I purchased remains unfired in the box and I have yet to chamber a barrel for the action I just had to have. Purchasing all 3 pieces at one time was a tough pill to swallow but I certainly don't regret it now especially since there will be no more.
